any expats getting such an error message in singapore (or wherever else)?
i primarily watch netflix on my laptop (hdmi to tv) in a browser via vpn for the US catalog.
i tried using it on my smart tv in malaysia by using logging into the tv’s netflix app but it tells me no dice.
my account was created a long time ago in turkey and charged in turkish dollars to my US credit card. <$5 sgd !
works fine in malaysia via laptop as described above.
works fine in a singapore smart tv as well. only singapore catalog avail naturally.

I’ve used Netflix in many countries and on many devices - the only time I have seen such a message is while using a VPN, and it usually cleared up the next day. Given you are not using a VPN there, it has to be a device specific issue. Have you tried updating the software and/or the OS on the TV? That’d be my next move.
I often use an Amazon Fire Stick (with any TV) because I can install the Strong VPN app (which I have a subscription for) directly on the device and then access just about everything as if I was in the US. I’ve also got an Apple TV and Roku, but they don’t work as well overseas.

oooo. i didn’t know you could do that with a fire stick
!
i have had a US prime sub for years. i’m gonna get a fire tv stick later this year. thanks for the hot tip! i’m using windscribe and getflix depending on what devices i use to access overseas content.
i assume if strong vpn works, something else will work too! prime videos have been detecting vpns on laptops for a long time so i’ve defaulted to using getflix.
the tv in question has been updated. it runs the google app store (all current) and is a relatively recent model. i’m not sure what gives but i may set up a separate network for it and my amazon speakers to get US content if i’m desperate.
the tv is a malaysian made sharp unit. the languages avail are odd and seems “less international “ / more localized than the ones i’m used to elsewhere.
i don’t mind. i’ve not really used netflix in a long time. soaptoday works well enough for me as i’m more patient in recent years. : )
but it’s convenient to be able to use the remote instead of a bluetooth track pad keyboard.
fire tv stick!!!

I would check the Amazon Store to make sure they have the app for the VPN you subscribe to.
Strong VPN app is available on Amazon and the Apple store — but for Apple it’s only for iPhone, not Apple TV! They are tricky.
Strange thing, the NBC Peacock app will not work on Amazon Fire Stick with VPN activated. However, Peacock does work with Apple TV if I go through my VPN router. My VPN router stopped working about 6 months ago and I’m lazy to fix it. Anyway, Peacock is hardly worth the trouble anymore — it was good in the beginning, but now just about all content has shifted to their premium (paid) service.

Maybe it could be something to do with this? If it’s a rented place, I wonder if another person may have already used that same device with another Netflix account…

I use Surfshark as my VPN, but when I watch "from the US", I don't notice a difference in catalog as compared to when I "watch from Singapore". Any idea why?

There is a lot of overlap between Netflix Singapore and Netflix US, but as an example, The Walking Dead series is not available on Netflix Singapore but is for US. I’ve been rewatching the entire series with my son now that he’s almost 15, I think he’s old enough.

I've only seen clips of The Walking Dead, never a full episode, may have to check that out. I've been re-watching Ugly Betty with my daughter, I used to watch it with her when she was a tot, but she obviously didn't understand it back then. Highly recommend, we both really enjoy it.

Heard a lot of buzz about ending password sharing too, but likewise have yet to hear of this happening to anybody I know.

Same here. They are probably targeting those who have basic plans first. I tune into Netflix from so many devices, my in-laws TV next door, on my phone in a half a dozen countries just in the last year (and often on VPN too), plus my two smart TVs and my Amazon stick with VPN… probably other devices and connections I’m not thinking of too. I think it’d be pretty hard to nail down who is exactly using the id+pw.

I also wonder what will happen to those who are family sharing an account with one or more members living overseas. Do they, then, have to create new accounts and pay double? Or how would they prove their relation to one another? Seems really unenforceable.

That's interesting, I never saw this issue. I guess I just never used content that isn't available in Singapore.

I recently got a pop up message on Netflix that was trying to “sell me” the ability to share my account with other family members for like S$6.98 or something close to that.
It might look like I share because I access it from my home, from my in-laws home, over VPN and also on my phone from various parts of the world I might be traveling in… but I don’t actually share my account with anyone.

I recently got a pop-up stating the same. It is because you switched your account from Turkey to Singapore. I would recommend you to use a VPN.

Realistically, if it isn't available in Singapore, you would never be able to access it anyway, at least through the regular app.
