Any classical music fans here?

Well, this week I attended two big concerts and piano master-class.
It was evening of American music in Esplanade with SSO and concert of Russian music in Conservatory (such a pain to get there).
Absolutely fantastic music of Bernstein, wonderful composer. Contemporary music with a lot of music fun and weird sounds. Wonderful.

It was music of two Russian composers on the Concert of Russian music: Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Very good concert, but Shostakovich is very gloomy as a usual. This symphony was written in such bloody year in Russian history: 1937.
There were so few Russians on that concert, though all tickets were sold out.

Donizetti (a romantic opera composer) was asked to write an opera in two weeks needed by a Milanese tax offical. The man suggested he take someone elses and revamp it but he said no and wrote a new opera in two weeks. The Result was L'elisir d'amore (The Exlir of Love), his most famous Opera and is currently number 20 on America's most performed Operas.

The Ninth Curse.

Beethoven's notoriously difficult, groundbreaking Ninth (once called "the hammer that finally killed classicism") was his first symphony in more than a decade. It was also his last. Incredibly, Schubert, Dvorak, and Vaughan Williams (among others) also died after composing a ninth symphony.

Indeed, musicologists joke about a 'ninth symphony syndrome': Mahler, superstitious about his ninth, promptly attempted to complete a tenth - and promptly died. Bruckner, despite numbering his first two symphonies 00 and 0, also died while composing his ninth. And Sibelius? He wisely stopped after his eighth - and went on to live another 33 years.

A young woman is taking cello lessons. She's not all that good, and during a particularly lamentable practice session her teacher can't stand it any more and says:
"Lady, you've got between your legs an instrument that, if adequately caressed, could give boundless pleasure to you and thousands of other people; and the only thing you seem to be able to do is to scratch and scratch it!"

I had a rehearsal today with two violinists and pianist. I think it will be nice concert. We'll play some pieces that never were performed in Singapore, as well as popular classical tunes. But I need to bring guitar with me whole day, also note stand... Sometimes I am envious to flute players.

So what about guitar players in Singapore?

I see rather often people with guitars in cases. But I haven't heard about serious guitar education in Singapore. There's no guitar class in the conservatory as far as I know. So many music schools provide in-depth violin and piano tuition, but there no or few guitar classes.
What do they play, these people with guitars on the streets? Just simple chords to accompany simple pop tune?

Hi, fans of classical music!
It finally happened...
Don't continue, I am not slightly mad, no (I hope)
But we played a concert of classical music.
There were four of us - two violinists, pianist and me both guitar and piano.
Besides, I did announcements with adding interesting trivia facts, jokes about composers we've played or about their compositions.
And it was about 200 people who came. Incredible.
Need to think about new concert program.

Any suggestions about what to put in the next program? Any favorite pieces?

I play piano but just started for a few years. I like Tchaikovsky's violin concerto lst movement but i'm not sure if it could be played with such a small group. For piano pieces, I like Beethoven's ''Pathetique" and Schubert's Piano Sonata D. 960.

Hi,

I used to play flute back in my university's Chamber Ensemble... but ever since I moved here to Singapore, I haven't gotten to practice as much and I miss playing. Have played different genres, but I enjoy pop, classical, broadway the most. I used to play classical piano too. I've been trying to look for a not-so-intense group but haven't found any. Not intending to join professional organizations since I can't play that well anymore...

This weekend I had a mood for playing guitar studies, I played about 50 studies of Giuliani, Sor, Carulli, Carcassi, Diabelli. It's fun.
I like Giuliani the most.
