Recommendation on a good school with German

Post by ElizabethG » Wed, 09 Mar 2016 11:07 pm

Please can anybody recommend a strong international Primary/Secondary school in Singapore that also offers German as a second language.
As we are only planning to move from September, I have zero knowledge on the education. Browsing on the net resulted in the German European School only, however, we do not really seek for a German curriculum, but preferably for a high standard IB or British Curriculum where the second taught language is German instead of Mandarin which we want to skip.
Thank you very much!!!

Hi , the German European school is unique in that it has two streams running side by side. One school two school systems. You can choose the German stream which leads to German high school diploma -Abitur or you can choose the European stream which teaches the IB curriculum. My children both attend the European section the language of instruction within the European section is English and the children learn German as a second language from kindergarten until they graduate. They have different levels of German that they teach to the children depending on their proficiency. German as foreign language, German as second language and German as mother tongue.
My children came from the UK system into the German European school and are absolutely flourishing in the IB system.

Just a little extra info for you : The German European has just started a very exiting new project to build a new school which should be ready in the summer of 2018. This is when both of our campuses will join together again. We currently have two sites which are 10 minutes apart. One is our Junior school campus where you will find the Primary and Pre-Primary and our Main Campus ( next to the jungle) where you will find secondary and Kindergarten + plus a few extra monkeys which are quite amusing at times. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you.

Oh, great , I appreciate your support very much!!! Yes, we are interested in the European section with German classes on a daily base. Currently they go to a fantastic school with British curriculum abroad and I want to make sure they have a good English school with high academic standards again in Singapore. Does the European school fulfil this criteria as well? I mean high level of Math, science and good English? I am not concerned about the German as I believe by definition it is good. And last question if the teachers are of good quality. We are seeking a school with strong teachers with nice and warm attitude towards kids. Is it the only school with German as optional second langusge /apart from the Swiss one?/? Many many thanks!!!

Sorry, I forgot to ask: do they have to choose a third language, like Mandarin or French as well? Thank you.

Hi they can choose a second foreign language in grade 6 ( French , Spanish, mandarin those are the main three)
My children have been at the school now for 9 years and I have been extremely happy with their education. The teachers are excellent and the results that the children achieve at their final Diploma are also of a very high standard.
The reason we chose this school because it is smaller than the some of the bigger International Schools ( which resemble more universities than schools) and it has a real family feel to it and my kids are very happy. My oldest one will be graduating this year and will be very sad to leave GESS.

I believe this is the only school in Singapore that introduces German at the lower levels.
I think UWCSEA also run a German programme but at what age I am not sure sorry.
