It is interesting to note that the ruling families in some of the gulf states cannot afford to legalise alcohol because they are the chief source of the stuff in the country and earn too much money from it!

Oh, Malaysia. Yeah, I've heard about the problems between the muslims and the non-muslims. Glad I'm not in Malaysia.

Would you like to send me your email address through pm?

In Malaysia, Muslim guy can divorce the wife by sending a SMS to inform the wife. The wife has no right to say NO.

However, the wife cannot divorce the husband without the husband agreement.

on one hand, it is moving on with the time by using technology (dont think allah see that coming), but on the other, it is so backward in respect to woman. where's the equality?

The following verse is in the quran:

Q4.34(Shakir): Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and BEAT THEM; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

I'm just curious. What are the opinions of the muslims(whether Singaporeans or immigrants to Singapore) on the above quran verse? Do you think it is alright for women to be beaten?

So what? Try Leviticus in the Old Testament... same same

20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
20:11 And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
20:12 And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them.
20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
20:14 And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.
20:15 And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast.
20:16 And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
20:17 And if a man shall take his sister, his father's daughter, or his mother's daughter, and see her nakedness, and she see his nakedness; it is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people: he hath uncovered his sister's nakedness; he shall bear his iniquity.

SE, I am actually interested in what the muslims think about that verse in the quran. Quran is a book that is still a book they try to adhere to as much as possible.

My understanding from most of the christians I talk to is that they don't follow the old testament (e.g. Leviticus and deutronony). So, I do believe that at least christianity has evolved to fit in with modern times.
