Post by ROSEMARY AND KEN » Thu, 23 Jan 2014 12:54 pm

Hello all,

my wife and I are moving to Singapore in the next few months from Bangkok.

Whats the latest opinions on good value for money areas to live. Rental wise?

Must be able to get to Orchard road, Traders hotel area.

Also we have done all the usual cost comparisons but does anyone have any recent experience of moving and the reaL cost of living please?

Many thanks

Ken

It depends what you want and how much you want to spend. Anywhere close to the city centre is expensive, farther out a bit less so. Search around the forum there are a number of threads on typical costs.

Overall - SP is very expensive (overpriced) - rent, real estate, groceries, and the cars of course. It's a captive market and a controlled market. Some things are relatively cheap - eg. public transit.

Orchard Road is perhaps the simplest place to commute to/from.
Orchard Road vicinity, is probably the most expensive to live in.

You tend to start considering neighbourhoods by working up a list, like (v1.0)

- commute destination/s
- acceptable commute times
- housing budget
- size of property required
- housing costs by district
- amenities required (condo? walk to shops? etc*10)

budget would be highest priority if you are talking about value for money since housing in singapore is pricey.
traveling around should not be an issue as the public transport is pretty much convenient. i would suggest you looking at houses near-by the train stations (on the line where orchard is) or better traffic if you are planning to get your own transport.
