when you have a good FDW...

Post by PNGMK » Tue, 21 Jan 2014 9:27 am

I've been through an interesting experience and revelation....

We have a "good" FDW. She's pretty much what most employers want. Good at childcare and housecleaning and cooking. Well behaved (i.e. moral). She's working on a bachelors part time in hotel and tourism and is going to ESL classes and is working towards paying for a house for her husband and herself to move back to in a few years so she has her future in mind.

We are going to give her up in the latter half of the year. What has surprised me is how proprietary we feel about her. When someone (no offense) approached me on the forum about taking her over I was quite 'protective'.... I guess it's because we put in effort to bring her up and she's going to be a bonus to whoever she goes to. We know that she won't go back to a Chinese family and probably not a local family at all.... at our church a few people have enquired and we've demurred.... because we suspect they won't treat her well, (i.e. they go through maids like tissues). It's almost as though she has become a paid adopted daughter and we want her to achieve her goals. This is something I did not expect at all when we took her on and I know the old timers are going to chorus "She's using you, you sucker!" but honestly, she's not.

I don't think there's a morale in the story but to me, it's great to see positive feedback in an individual for effort put in.

No, it's normal I think. You get good and bad employers and FDWs. My lady is a delight, I like her and she likes us so when we leave I will try my best to hook her up with a job at least as pleasant. In fact, with two years dog and western training I think she might end up earning more.

I'd ask poor Steve1960 if he was interested.

this is very normal.
we had a good one as well, when she was at a marriageable age and was looking to get married, my mom practically sponsored the whole wedding. I know someone who went one step further, they bought her a small house

Thanks for the thoughts and I would have been interested but we are now set off down the route of employing my wife's friend from the Philippines (yes I am sure I will be the butt of more jokes for this!)

I agree... but it's shocking how some people approach hiring a maid - very mercenary and with no care for the maids own desires and goals (which means an inevitable mismatch).

For example;

"You maid, we want her ok, but she cannot take Sunday off ah".

"Actually she's almost completed her B.Bus and needs to take Sundays off for study and exams".

"What for you care about your maid study?"

"Because we agreed when we hired her that she could take a day off AND study in the evenings".

"But I need her available 24 hours ah!"

"Maybe you need a slave, either way Mary is not for you".

"What you care, you tell her she transfer to me she cannot object hah".

"Well I object your racist prick".

We have the same with our nanny (local one) and part of it is that in one point you just realize how precious those good ones are.

I was about to give you a +1. But now that I've had root beer out my nose and on my laptop, I'm taking that point back.
