It's also a reason why Android face unlock requires blinking as proof of a human face and not a photograph.

The Android one is likely detuned also due to the varying (and often low) quality of the front facing cameras. If they were all comparable quality and at least 720p for film it likely wouldn't even need that; it would be able to detect the slightest motion of your pulse.

Yes - I happen to know quite a lot about it... image recognition, that is. I did several courses in university revolving around this. There are many approaches to the topic.

In order to recognize a face, like a fingerprint, it is necessary to have the reference face in a database but both government and industry are collecting faces and tying them to a name and other characteristics by the millions.
