Short term sublet, illegal?

Post by mattonlaptop » Sat, 04 Jan 2014 6:50 pm

Hi all,

New to the forum, so hello everyone.

For the past few months I have been subletting a condo from the main tenant, no contract. Just a guarantee from my employer.

Our verbal agreement was from Sept - Jan until I could find somewhere permanent.

I've since been reading that anything under 6 months is illegal, to prevent renting to tourists?

I have had a few issues with the main tenant, and until resolved have withheld the rent, but he is putting severe pressure on me to pay, saying he will tell my employer etc.

Is this let illegal? And is it my fault for not knowing this before? I have read the landlord can be fined up to 200k.

If push comes to shove i want to know that I can throw this at him.

Thanks.

It's not allowed in HDBs, and it's not legal to rent to those on Social Visit Pass.

If you're in a private property and/or have a valid work pass, it's probably not allowed but the severity of the offense and punishment are a bit hazy... And even then, you're sublet from the main tenant. If he's on a valid lease, then there might not be any wrong-doing at all.

And then, don't underestimate your culpability in this in the eyes of the government. They tend to side with the citizen/landlords over the troublemaking foreigners. You're unwisely bringing unwanted scrutiny to yourself.

I'd suggest just leaving and finding a new place to live instead of trying to inflict some kind of vengeance here.

Pay the damn rent. You're far more in the wrong that he is.
