Tools: T-6 Torx driver (specialist screwdriver)

Post by JR8 » Tue, 17 Dec 2013 11:40 am

I'm trying to track down the subject (it's like a higher-security star-shapped allen key). I have a call into Handyman @ Scotts to see if they have one in stock. However I appreciate that T6 is a small size, and not really an everyday thing.

I've looked on e-bay, and can see plenty, as cheap as US$4. BUT the cost to ship it for arrival prior to New Year is US$30-40 in addition!

Does anyone have any ideas where else I might source one locally?

There may be some in Sim Lim Square/Tower. However, I wanted to be sure (and was too lazy to trawl Sim Lims) so I just got mine from ebay; I picked those shipping from China/Hong Kong for free. You can also look for cellphone repair accessories as they most probably would come with a T6. For small screws, even cheapo drivers would do fine (and if they won't, use some WD40).

Have a look in the Adelphi Mall. There is/was a good hardware place that would probably stock that sort of thing.

Don’t make a special trip. It’s a while since I’ve been there and it may have gone.

After calling Handyman, and them promising to call me back, hours later after giving up hope I then spent quite some time on Ebay trying to order Torx-driver sets, about S$45 a go, incl freight (freight seems to make up maybe 90% of the cost).

No go. Ebay recognises I've moved location (i.e., to SG). Needs to do a confirm, but will NOT recognise either my landline or mobile #. Brilliant!!

Whilst tearing my hair out at that, Handyman called back and have a set in stock at S$24. Done! I shall go down tomorrow, to give me contingency time before the next critical issue arises!

p.s. Many thanks Taxi for your kind offer (and others for advice). This little job is getting mission critical now, and 'the holidays' are making it incredibly tricky on timing (post etc). All I need to do now is source the specific battery/cell I need ['CR2450'] and we're under-way! If not Courts, then I imagine it'll have to be Sim Lim or Peninsular Plaza...

How about Masterpro?

Give them a call or better visit in person one of their outlets.

One more: Element14. Very reliable and reasonably priced. Delivery can be within single day if they have SG stock.

Element14 is what used to be Farnells if you're familiar with them.

Also RS Components has a respectable stock of this kind of tool. But when you look online check the stock is in Singapore or you could be waiting months...

Yep, former Farnell, but from my experience it is not frequent to wait for months (yes, it may happen). Even if the stock is UK or US based it often takes ~1 week to have it delivered.
