Homeowner jailed for renting to Overstayer

Post by AngMoG » Thu, 31 Oct 2013 5:01 pm

As there have been a few posts recently about renting without some type of residency: link

In case it gets cut out, search for news about "Homeowner jailed for harbouring immigration offender".

Bottom line, the landlady was sentenced to 7 months' jail for renting out a bed to an overstayer. (At that price, it won't have been a whole room.)

Apparently it was time to send a message again...

There's similar in the UK. The state are simply unable to police borders, and identity papers. Quite why ... who knows ??

So, they've made landlords legally responsible for checking/confirming tenants legal/residential status. Devolving law enforcement to the individual citizen, under threat of a 4-figure fine (naturally).

Actually, more than 10 years ago, they were doing it, then the HDB/URA became a bit more than lax, in inspection, including checking for unauthorised rental of HDB etc ...

BTw, recently I saw in a shop, in a 'famous plaza' ads for "BED SPACERS" for room of 6 .. and 3 bedroom X 6 person = 18 .. per HDB unit ..

Nothing new. The typical case of catch one offender and punish him very badly and set an example by publishing in the national papers.

Articles like these are less of a news more of a warning/announcement.
