My take: With every country aiming to raise own population (in the name of sustaining GDP), we will be seeing food scarcity like a Sliders episode where a government put in place a population engineering policy where you're encouraged to breed as little as possible for money (and win million-dollar lottery in exchange for lethal injection).

I am not a fan of using GDP as a measure of a country's worth, or its population.

So long as there is 'enough to go around' and everybody is happy then even with 'no growth' the world can still turn and be accaptable.

If you believe what you read then we have the capability to feed that amount of folk from the resources available.
There shouldnt be anyone starving at the minute but a lot of food is produced where folk dont need it and the excess is discarded as waste.

There is simply masses and masses of under utilized land. Just consider the whole NW of Australia.

The problem is the cities like Singapore and the ending petroleum era.

I'm actually working on a thesis along these lines....

The fall and decline of Singapore – an energy crisis in the world’s most densely populated city.

A post peak energy apocalyptic tale.

Looks like China and India are going in opposite directions. China with its 1 child policy for sometime now, has an bigger aging population and that will hurt them in the future.

India on the other hand is still not able to control its burgeoning population. Few years ago, it was thought that India will become a super power because of its large pool of youngsters in the workforce. But now with all the problems like poor infrastructure and bad governance and poor economy growth and job growth, it looks like there large pool of youngsters wont have enough jobs and salaries will get depressed and consumption will suffer.

So, I dont thinks its a case of population growth = GDP growth in most of these very populous countries that are causing the problem.

The Pinnacle@Duxton occupies 0.025sq/km of land and houses 1,848 units. So to keep things simple lets assume every person in the world will share with just 1 person. So on 0.025sq/km of land you can house 3696 people.

Texas is 696,241 km² which works out as 27849640 Pinnacle buildings. So that means in texas alone we could house 102,932,269,440 == ~103billion people at maximum capacity.

What that means is that using just 1/10th of the state of texas we can house all of those 9.5bn people and use 9/10th of the land for parks and farming and cattle herding.

The rest of the world we can leave for the other species.
