Moving to singapore...DP v/s EP?

Post by Lailafamily » Thu, 26 Sep 2013 11:43 pm

Hi all,

Apologies if this sounds like a silly post! I am at present a housewife in America due to the H4 visa restriction. I have been working for 5 years previously in India. We are now contemplating a move to Singapore. I have been reading previous posts where women in my situation are having a tough time trying to get an EP after being on a DP, even though it is allowed by the MOM for a DP to work (unlike in the US and H class visa categories!) I am trying to gauge if it is better for me to get a job offer for SIngapore while still in the US and then in which case I apply directly for an EP along with th husband... I know this is a good idea, and hence apologise if its sounds silly that I am posting abt it...I want to know realistically if this is possible? In case I do get a job offer, can I (being an H4 in the US) apply for a EP and what are the chances of it being approved? Givn the fact that I have spent a number of years here being a dependant, I am not keen to move across the world only to face the same scenario again!

Thanks for all advice!

Laila

You have missed the most important part. What work were you doing in India? Whats your qualification?

I am not sure what the prospects are for media and communications career in Singapore. I will let others with more knowledge answer that.

Not a great field to look for a job for non-PR/SC. There are plenty of locals who are interested and working in that field, and the pay is not great either. Not saying there are no opportunities, you can always try.

My recommendations for anybody reading these forums and thinking about taking up a position here in Singapore. Make ALL of your decisions BASED ONLY on the job offer currently on the table that is prompting the move. This is the ONLY thing that will be concrete and "assuming" the other will be able to find work is a recipe for disaster. The trailing spouse, be they male or female will have a potential problem finding a job here. Even the Letter of Consent, which used to be easy to find a job with has now been tightened up and one could find themselves not able to find anything OR only find something with a salary that will be an insult to ones intelligence, as the employer will know you are a trailing spouse and therefore expenses are already covered by the EP holder's employer. If the trailing spouse wants to have a meaningful job, I would suggest not taking up a position here until both parties have a guaranteed position. Anything else will be just luck.
