Hi,
We are moving out to Singapore in Feb 2014 and we can't decide whether or not to ship our furniture. We would rather not ship the big things like sofa, bed etc.. and buy those secondhand once we know the size of the apartment, but I've looked on gum tree, Craig's list and some others and there really isn't anything out there. Can someone please tell me where do expats try to sell their furniture when they leave Singapore????
Many thanks,

Try 'expatauctions'. They have a lot of stuff but they also run it as a bit of a shop, supplementing their consignment stuff with stock they buy new from india. They have a website.
The most active online list here is gumtree.
Or alternatively wait until Chinese New Year when everyone is doing the big clean out/sprint clean, and you can pick up a lot of stuff!

If your company is offering to ship it for you, ship your own. Nothing like having your own stuff in a foreign land.
That said, when we moved back here the second time, our furniture had been around the globe a couple of times and was tired and worn out so we decided to sell it and buy all new here. It is fantastic and we have bought really high quality furniture and it is both beautiful and comfy and all.... however it comes with a price.
I would suggest that if you do buy new furniture, just go with the IKEA stuff. It is rubbish though but for a 2-3 year period it will be fine. Perhaps you want to check out Taylor B on Keppel Road as well. They ship in directly from Indonesia and surrounding countries and they are not that expensive and their furniture is really cool.

I second the Salvation Army - there are a couple of bigger stores that specialize in furniture, in Woodleigh and Upper Bukit Timah. Craigslist is also pretty popular, you could try that too.
