You can skip the wizard that asks for your email. You won't have access to the Play store but you can sideload apps after enabling it.

But yeah, windows 8 sucks donkey's arse.

You can do it like that too with Win8 Pro, but I'm pretty sure Win8 RT is locked and sucky like that.

I just checked a roughly default install of Mac OS X on a new Macbook Air.

The OS, along with the applications it comes installed with (iPhoto, iTunes, Garage Band, etc) is using 21.3GB of space on the main partition.

8GB of the 21GB is the sleep file, since the laptop has 8GB of RAM. 2GB more is for swap files.

A 'marketing speak' 512GB SSD is apparently only 500 real-world GB. Of that:

/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.3 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_CoreStorage 499.4 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
/dev/disk1
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD *499.1 GB disk1

So 210MB goes to EFI (BIOS for PC people), 650MB to the recovery partition, and 300MB is lost in overheard from using full disk encryption. (The difference between disk0s2 and disk1s0).

Sorry meant 2k :P

Or was that technically before they 'merged' the professional and consumer lines? I ran it over Win98, but don't recall.

Wasn't it a different line originated from Win NT? I think it was merged indeed in XP IIRC.

Strangely, I didn't have any issues with Vista on my laptop. I just changed my home PC a week ago from XP to Win7 so as to get a better cooperation between it and the new Win8 laptop and, touch wood, so far so good.

I think MS came up 70% with the Win8 development but maybe up to ~90% with the upcoming 8.1 and we'll be good to go for another few years.
