Win 8 Sucks Donkey Ass

Post by PNGMK » Mon, 19 Aug 2013 11:38 am

I bought a new laptop with 128GB SSD. It came with Win 8 pre installed on a OEM partition. After it had finished initializing it had a grand total of 29GB left for me to use! I took it back to the shop in Funan and demanded they down grade it to Win 7 Pro. After that it had 95GB free! (I had them remove the restore partition). Win 8 like the Apple and Android OS is just an abortion of an apps server that is designed to charge your credit card - just like android and apple you can't even initialize it without providing an email address. Win 7 Pro is the last of the Microsoft 'operating systems' - if you need a new laptop buy one quick while you can still get them to downgrade it Win 7 Pro (Win 8 Pro has downgrade rights to Win 7 and in Singapore they are able to get hold of the OEM Win 7 Pro CD's with legitimate licensing).

I agree. I just got a new dell that came with windows 8 and it already had SIX partitions! Mostly recovery partitions that I wouldn't use (as I dual boot linux and keep all my files on a separate partition all together so I can reinstall either whenever I like). Deleting all the recovery parts free'd up more than 15gb space on my 256ssd

On that note, if anyone else hates widows and fancies trying out linux, give me a shout and we could do a linux meet up day!

Which distro do you favour?

I built some servers with Debian - they ran for over 700 days before needing a reboot for a hardware change. At the same time I had a Windows server that needed a script put into reboot it every night because of a memory leak I couldn't stop (in a printer driver I think).

How come only 128GB hard drive man? My cheapo Dell latitude that I bought about a year ago has 500GB.

yup. I've only ever used Ubuntu but these days thinking I might try a few others - now I have a machine to use again. Mint would probably be first on the list. I still keep dual boot though sadly for playing games. Wine can just about manage some but it's not as smooth as using windows unfortunately.

Solid state drives (SSD) are always a lot smaller. It's the price you pay for the mega performance boost.

Wow! I am so outdated with technology!

Here's a nice article though about SSD:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505124_162- ... -with-ssd/

and I agree with it. I am generally a later adopter for any technology and actually wait for the price curve to fall to a flat trajectory, before buying it.

In fact I bought a laptop only when it had become so cheap that desktops didnt make sense anymore, which is about 5 years ago :)

+1 - and SSD's make a HUGE performance difference.

Nice article, but as mentioned in the comments - it's completely left out the main reason for getting an SSD. The speed. Even crappy windows boots up in seconds.

I agree, for a general use home laptop, just for facebook email and google, an SSD is an expense you don't need. But if you need to be running high performance programs or work with big data, then an SSD is worth the investment.

+1. My Cheapo $700 dell laptop is used only for 2 things.
1) To browse the web and more often, this forum :P
2) To connect remotely to my office network and work from home

My laptop is more than capable for both. In fact my internet speed of 3mbps is likely to a performance bottle neck, much before the hardware is. But at the moment, the setup is optimum :)

It boots faster, what else? I mean, I can imagine intensive data on disk dumping/reading application but are they that common?
I have one SSD in a server not for the performance reason but to limit heat emission. The whole thing is fanless. Also performance-wise it depends on the SSD itself and the other parts of the hardware:

Code: Select all

hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sdb

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 1834 MB in 2.00 seconds = 916.45 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 640 MB in 3.00 seconds = 213.15 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads: 1822 MB in 2.00 seconds = 911.23 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 372 MB in 3.01 seconds = 123.49 MB/sec
sda is OCZ-VERTEX2; the other, regular one WDC WD30EZRS-00J99B0
Not such a dramatic difference especially that the WD is "green" so a low performance one.

I bought a new laptop about 6months ago with Win8 preinstalled. It works pretty well but, of course, I'm generally not happy about basically having two OS on it, Win8 and Win7. The touchscreen helps a lot but it's strange to have to go to the Win8 tiles sometimes to kick start a program under Win7 without the Start Button and Menu but by keeping as many shortcuts as needed in Win7 it works a treat. Let's see what Win8.1 comes up with in October!

The laptop came with both a 500GB SATA drive and a separate SSD for holding the bulk of Win8. It means the whole things boots in about 15-20s and quicker if I just let it hibernate. It can also sleep for days without absorbing any power.

Wow so much FUD and bullshit all in one long incredibly long run-on sentence.

First off, Apple has two OSes. Mac OS X and iOS. Neither force you to provide an email address to "initialize" it. While iOS only permits you to install applications from its App Store, OS X has no such restrictions at all. It's a full on UNIX with a proper GUI. You can ignore the UNIX half if you want, or you can use it as much as you'd like.

iOS's walled garden App store is limiting, but it was a design decision for security on that platform. IMO it makes sense on a phone, less sense on a tablet.

Oh, Android doesn't require an email address either. You can boot it up and use your phone or tablet without ever "logging in" to a service.
