Need info for Relocating to Singapore from the U.S

Post by tblaser » Wed, 17 Jul 2013 1:16 pm

I am relocating to Singapore with my boyfriend of several years. I have read and believe that Singapore has the "common law wife" status. Does anyone know if this is in fact true? My fear is that I will not be allowed to stay in Singapore if we are not legally married. Neither of us want to go down that avenue again. He has a fantastic job opportunity in Singapore. I will be looking for employment...I am currently a secondary English teacher in the U.S.A. I understand employment for myself may be difficult to find. Any info is greatly appreciated on these topics. Thank you.

Singapore does not HAVE the common law status, but it does (for visa purposes) recognize common law couples from other countries which have it.
Search this forum for threads about the topic. I believe you'll need a statement from your embassy (or other approved authority) confirming your common law status, and proof of having lived together for a few years.
Please note that common law partners get an LTVP, which does not allow work. This means you'll have to change to a work pass when you find a job.
