Easy, local stereotype talk says, Indo maids have a history of killing their employer .. Indian Maids / Sri Lankan Maids, their BFs, and Filipino maids, their Friends...

So .. you know which maid to choose .. ;)

Just kidding, well, Singapore, if a person from x country does something, the whole country gets tarred right ??

I (a single male) was under this impression when I researched about potentially getting a maid. I read somewhere that a single person have to have a special permission to do so???

Otherwise, what's stopping me from sponsoring a Thai to come over as my "maid"??? Hypothetically speaking, of course ....

I don't think Thais are on the approved country for maids, for one. But I'm sure as a single male (not a house full of males , e.g., construction engineers sharing a condo) would have to jump through some hoops even though it is apparently legal now.

Single person to have permission ? not for me.. then again, that was before the days MOM enforced examination for potential employers ..

As SMS said, Thai ? ah, that will be very interesting, when MOM staff let their imagination go wild .. or not ..

And nowadays, more than Randomly, MOM sends staff to inspect the residence of single males getting maids .. just ensure that your under garments are not mixed up together :P :P

Wow, is that really true? Only in Singapore (OK, maybe in Taliban controlled areas of Afghanistan too) would you have this kind of 'Hanky Panky Detection Squad'

well, people learn .. from the days of me having a maid, when i was eligible a bachelor, to days where Employers have to go for examination, maids also have to take exam .. etc. etc.. including maids being told specifically that 'boss cannot put video cam in maid room etc..

Well, well .. if you find a hundred way to play hell, MOM may find 90 ways to detect .. :D

After all, this is SG .. entry to your own apartment/residence ..don't need WARRANT .. for 'certain cases' - or so I am told .. or maybe you signed off your rights away in some application ..

The people I know doing it (again not in SG) aren't actually dating their FDWs, they're making FDWs of their GFs just for the visa. Most of those girls probably came over for a 'holiday' and spent every night in the same set of bars, if you get what I mean. So yeah, probably just as or more dangerous than an FDW

It is acceptable for anyone to hire a FDW whether or not she is or becomes your girlfriend.

If I am correct then on what basis are MOM inspecting ? (This assumes of course that MOM are)

Presumably for such a trivial offence (assumption of course that crime has been committed) a Warrant would never be issued. Therefore the Employer can refuse MOM entry thus preventing evidence/proof. Correct?

On a practical note, the thorny matter of blackmail. If the relationship turns sour then could the FDW have any "hold" on the Employer?

See, the issue is .. My take is .. why even let room for complications, drama, nonsense .. or HK style demand for residence / PR ?

And in the past, before MOM was enforcing this rule more strictly, a few maids did get married to their employer and the MOM people were in Catch-22 - allow the maid to get residency, then opens the flood gates, don't allow, the 'poor' Singaporean man (assuming it was a Singaporean .. ) is being subject to undue stress by separating him from his wife ..

On what basis they enter ? as I said, when you sign on some forms, maybe somewhere you gave away your right to privacy .. :D :D

SMS would agree on that part ..

Enforcement of the requirement to have permission to marry WP holders also deters people from bringing their Significant Others on FDWP visa's.

Doing so will make sure they screw up any chances of settlement they two have in the future.

I know this is an older thread but . . . . I just read it and was thinking . . .

Why can't men from Indonesia or the Phillipeans be FDWs in Sg? If there's a demand for live-in helpers by single men, why not? I understand the Sg gvt is concerned about men who live alone having a woman helper, so having a male FDW would solve the issue.

Also, families with sons in their late teens or early 20s living at home won't have to worry about them hitting on the female FDW (or the FDW trying to hit on them) if they had a male helper.

Think about it. Men are employed as cooks in restaurants, gardeners around condos, and cleaners in buildings. Why couldn't they do the same thing as a FDW? Has this ever been brought up?

Just a thought.

Might create an issue of a different kind though. What would stop a pink dotter from hiring his s/o as an FWD? Same as the guy bringing in his gal friend as a FWD.

How to check if the male FDW is a gender bender or not? Consequences even worse for the parents!

Just reading through this and I don't understand the bad reputation of the Thais and why they are not on the approved maids list. If it is the fear of them ending up working the nights in clubs and pubs and where ever, how are that different from the Philippine girls?
