Dear all,

I have two broken MacBooks - one an old plastic model from 2008, and another unibody from 2010 - that need to get repaired.

One of the machines appears to have some sort of hard drive problem, while the other completely froze and died when I was typing an email.

Can anybody recommend the best place in Singapore to get these computers looked at?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Any of these is what I'd recommend:

Macs let you very easily boot off external drives, so any of them can quickly be diagnosed by any of the above authorized service centers.

If you're slightly technical and have access to another Mac, google "target disk mode" and then boot off of them using a good Mac to further troubleshoot.

I have seen a fair number of laptops (including Apple ones) being repaired in Sim Lim Square.

Replacing the hard drive is pretty much a very straightforward fix. You only need to remove some screws and plug the new hard drive. You can buy parts online anyway.

Where can i find OEM parts for macbooks or atleast closer to OEM quality ? Please dont say SLS as i prefer to shop by word of mouth rather than enquiring in multiple shops

I am looking to replace the CPU fan which apparently is broken IMO as it usually runs at 6200 rpm and CPU temp shoots upto 70+ C. My mac is almost 5 yrs old and I prefer not to buy a new one as there are no issues apart from this damn fan/cpu heating up.

If it is just HDD that failed, it should be fairly easy to replace. You can find great installation videos for any Macbook type at the website below:

Nope HDD is all good and running. Its either the heat sink or the fan which is busted. So an easy option is to change the Fan and give it a shot else next step would be to replace the heat sink.

Your best hope will be one of those crappy shops in SLS that sell and repair used laptops. I always see lots of busted looking old Macs there. Maybe you could buy one cheaply for the part.

Otherwise, ask at an Apple authorized repair center. My previous post has a link to all of them in Singapore. It won't be cheap, and I wouldn't be surprised if they try to sell you the logic board /cpu/ and fan all as one very expensive piece.

Yes, likely, but he is in a kind of grey area - not sufficient circumstantial evidence to get him banned.

What I normally do is I take the part No, search it on Ebay, and order it from there. Admittedly I have never done it for a Mac but with any other laptop this is my SOP. Other than this I use them:
