Job opportunities for a chemical engineer in Singapore?

Post by cmiranda » Fri, 21 Jun 2013 2:08 am

Hello everybody!

I'm a 27-years old chemical engineer from Argentina.
I took a posgrade course in Nuclear Security and Radiological Protection, and I have been working for the Nuclear Regulatory Authority in my country for 1,5 years now (first job).

I' going to Singapore by the end of september and staying there for a month. I was wondering about the possibility of getting a job there...

Do you think that it's posible to find a job there in my field? What about the chemistry industry in general?

If someone can help me out, I will appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

Claudia.

The petrochemical industry is one of the biggest industries in Singapore but as of now there is no nuclear plant here. So there is always a chance to get work for a chemical engineer just not in a nuclear regulatory body or nuclear plant. There are also life science, semiconductor, and other industries that need chemical engineers. The challenge would be to get hired at your level of experience which is still quite low and also to get your pass approved by MOM (ministry of manpower).

Linkedin is also useful for many people but you will need the initial Singapore contact to start.

Thanks for your answer bro75!

And another question, do you think I should start applying for Jobs from my current place? Or should I wait till I am there, in Singapore?

I think you need to get focused. SG is a first world jobs market. It's unlikely you can roll up on a tourist visa and land a job here.

Get the interviews lined up, then get here and do them..

p.s. The government don't favour people with no status 'just being here'... you're a body on the ground, you need to serve some purpose...

I was thinking based on a previous experience, I moved to Chile once and while I was looking for Jobs from Argentina, they never replied, but once I was actually there (Chilean address, an phone number), I got many opportunities.

Anyway, you have a point and I should do my best trying to get interviews from here.

Thank you very much for the advice!

Ah I see. I take your point about opportunities arising when you're physically present. A downside is that while here for a month you're going to be staying in a hotel, and that's going to be expensive.

It might well be worth considering staying somewhere regionally (Thailand, Malaysia?) and commuting here for interviews. Don't know but doing a SCUBA course or two, and then clustering SGn into short windows would win hands down to be holed up here in a $$$ hotel room waiting for the phone to ring...

How about networking (via Linked-in or similar), and getting some 'inside advice'. Or, finding out if there are head-hunters in the industry, who know whose hiring your kind of roles...
