Searching for a job before moving for a limited time

Post by Zwonimir » Tue, 28 May 2013 1:14 am

Hi everybody! :)

First, congrats for the forum, I get a lot of informations reading posts here.

I'm a 31yo boy from Italy, interested to have an experience living and working in Singapore with a friend of mine.

I'll be there 2 weeks in June as a tourist, and in the last weeks I've submitted my resume to some companies via LinkedIn, StreetJobs and other major job websites, specifing my skills and the fact that I'll be in Singapore those weeks and willing to move permanently.
I didn't had any response, btw I wanna ask you if it's better to search for a job directly in Singapore.

Also I'm not graduated (I've a Diploma in IT) but I'm a very experienced web developer with more than 7 years of experience, and I saw there are a lot of opened positions there, but as I read in previous posts this kind of job is inflated with a lot of competition, especially with indian expats.
Is there any possibility to find a job in that lapse of time and moving there getting rapidly a working visa?

Instead my friend is a graduated and accomplished student and he search a work in the scientific research field related to the health system.

Sorry for the long post :D

Thank you,
Zwonimir

If I were a betting man, I'd bet against you being able to get a work permit. No degree and you are doing something that Singaporeans are fully capable of doing.

Unless you've got contracts and clients to bring to a new company, in which case they might be interested in you, I just don't see it happening.

Thanks Strong Eagle for the reply.

Yeah as I suppose, and that's similar to the situation in the Gulf countries (UAE, Qatar, ...), it's a pretty inflated job with a lot of competition, but really didn't know that also locals are a lot in the IT field.
So a company is more oriented on hire expats on fields where it lacks of locals, of course.

Also I dunno but I think a sponsor or even a guarantor is a plus, like in Gulf and sometimes in UK.

Thanks, btw I'll be in Singapore those days as a tourist, I'll check there too ;)

This is more like a basic requirement than a plus. If you find somebody willing to hire you this somebody will be your guarantor in some required or not extent. Other than this, no such a thing in respect to the employment.

Agree. There is absolutely nothing comparable other than the fact that both places have significant amount of expatriates compared to locals.

Singapore, although is not Australia or US, but it is pretty close and far far from anything like the Gulf

Thank you guys for the replies! :)

yeah I took the Gulf as a basis for comparison due to the high expats ratio but sure environments are totally different, and they're more different too if compared to the European Community one I suppose.

About research facilities ... are all state labs, private companies?
Is easier to apply for an interview directly there?
And which companies are hosted in Singapore in the Research field?

Thank you again, I really appreciate your help!

Some belongs to the government agencies, which you are required to be of stellar profile to be considered as part of the research team.

Some are private. At least Masters in Science will do. Some people may advise to approach recruiters specialising in labs and research roles but my personal advice would be to personally approach each company and send your CV.

Thanks Lynx!

At the moment I don't have nothing more to ask, just search some infos on internet about cultural spots, restaurants and shops to visit in Singapore ;)

As I know in June there's the Great Singapore Sales too.

Thank you again guys!
