Teaching Certificate to teach in international schools.

Post by Kyriakip » Wed, 22 May 2013 2:23 pm

I would like to know which institution here in Singapore offers a teaching certificate progam in order to teach in an International School. Currently I have a BS undergraduate degree from a US university. I would like to teach elementary school at an international school here in Singapore but I do not have a degree in education. Is there such an institution here in Singapore that offers such a program? Is there a program on line I can take to obtain a credible teaching certificate for elementary school? Thank you! Your information is much appreciated!!!!

No such thing. Your choices are;

1. A Dip Ed from a reputable university coupled with state approved teaching certification (i.e. registration) or license. Curtin is the closest that does this that I can think of.

2. An online program offering the same idea (Univ of Washington does this for example).

3. Teaching without one - quite common in int'l schools actually - esp if you have a Masters or similar. To get the teaching EXPERIENCE is a bit tricky tho.

4. I guess a local MOE approved program might exists?

Bottom line is Int'l schools (esp poorer ones) can be quite flexible in who they hire depending on which country they are in - I have a niece with a BA in India (no teaching cert) and a friend in Chiang Mai (PhD in Physics and LLB in Law but no teaching cert) who have managed to crack it. MY wife however has an MA and a TX teaching license and has far less issues finding work than either of those two.
