what is it with these 6 month contracts?

Hey guys,

I come across several jobs in IT in my skills area where companies are offering 6 month contracts. These are large MNCs mind you. Needless to say, I am not applying for them as long as I have my job.

Its not like 1 or 2 but almost 50% of the openings I come across are such short term, possible of renewal kind of contracts. I am wondering if these companies really able to get the kind of people they want, considering most talented people here are on work passes and no one is going to take a chance with such short term contracts.

Another thing I notice here is many positions here remain open for so long. I mean I interview for a company and I dont hear back for like 1 month and then one fine day I get a call for the next round. I wonder how these companies do their business

It is a corporate screw job, and one of the reasons, I saw my own business model as not workable in the future.

It's a risk reduced way for companies to bring on personnel with no long term commitment, and probably, no hit to the payroll/headcount accounts as it will come out of a project account.

I think there are enough out of work people out there that will be willing to try and skate for six months to full employment. It is also my view that MNC's have launched programs to move their talent out of Singapore and into lower cost countries... ie, Malaysia... so that this is a temporary thing anyway... soon it will all be gone.
