FT You're viral
This thread is the musical chairs of FT bashing. everyday a lucky foreigner becomes famous and goes viral among locals due to his/her comments.
Here's the lucky winner for today:
Russian FT!

don't worry, Filipinos, Indians, Chinese have all come before you.

What strikes me is:
- The reader comments on TRE seem more hate-filled and so on than the Russian chaps Facebook comments. Some readers even start publicly slagging off pinoys!? Most ironic.
- This is precisely why if you're on FB, you control your Friends List. I.e. stick to Friends you actually know and trust. Too many people (esp. the young) seem to accept a 'Friend request' from any and every stranger*, as AFAIU they think it makes them look popular.
- He might have just been mouthing-off, but TRE take it all SO earnestly, in fact you might conclude they're intentionally stoking tension to garner readership. If so that's a pretty dangerous path they're treading IMHO.
* I once helped out a friend (a real one
) by setting up a fake Facebook page, a pretty profile photo of a young lady, Friends list (all complete strangers who blindly accepted the requests (only about 2 out of 30-odd asked if they knew 'me'), posted a couple of updates and so on. Then once we had a bare-bones but plausible profile, set out to 'sting' my friends long-time boyfriend into meeting up for 'a drink and maybe 'some afters''.
It was surreal, hilarious in some ways (he was coming on all coochy-coo, but rapidly (in under a week) building on that to being very straight-forward about precisely how the evening might end up. An interesting insight into human nature.
p.s. Once I had all the evidence I needed, I simply handed over the account to my friend, and let her continue dealing with him...

How about this idea [please note this is 100% tongue-in-cheek, but it shows the flaws in reporting Facebook chatter as fact].
Set up a Facebook profile of anyone, 'John Doe'. Make it plausible, with lots of SGn friends (as described) then start a topic bitching about SG. Then tip-off the lazy journalists at TRE who will probably fall for it hook, line and sinker.
Someone from 'FT country X' really hacked you off this week? No problem, set up a profile as a national of that country, then repeat the above tip-off.
Sick and tired of your neighbours? Same as above.
Jealous of your colleague's 4C lifestyle?...
Your boss getting to you?....
As far as it seems with TRE you can 'become' anybody you wish.
Scary isn't it?

That is brilliant. But scary. Because it would be so very, very easy here ... TRE types aren't too swift at reading between the lines.JR8 wrote:How about this idea [please note this is 100% tongue-in-cheek, but it shows the flaws in reporting Facebook chatter as fact].

The question in my mind is this: Which causes potentially more damage to Singapore's reputation abroad - the Russian guy's FB chat, or the endless vitriolic racial hatred voiced by numerous commenters on TRE? I would say the latter is far more damaging, and if companies are considering whether or not to set up (or continue operating) in this country, this could have an impact on their decision making process.
If these people carry on as they are, they might end up scaring away many of the companies who provide them (directly or indirectly) with employment, rental income, etc. Perhaps they'll be happy then? Poorer maybe, but at least they'll have 'their' country all to themselves, right?

The TRE movement has been going on since quite a few years. When I came here in 2009 mid, they were operating under the site called Temasek Review.Mi Amigo wrote:The question in my mind is this: Which causes potentially more damage to Singapore's reputation abroad - the Russian guy's FB chat, or the endless vitriolic racial hatred voiced by numerous commenters on TRE? The only difference between now and then is these guys are getting a lot more mileage now, especially after GE2011, the ferrari crash(and the xenophobia labelling given to locals), the bus strike and the scandals.
Before that most expats wouldnt have even bothered about them. Now, everytime something happens, 1st thing people are doing is go and check the TRE website and find out whats written there.

Add to that the new FT curbs just released with the budget and any MNC who hasn't started their Plan B's are probably into overdrive by now and I'll bet you that lot who might have been looking to park here are relooking their options.
I projected, on the 40th birthday of this country, that it would be a non-entity in another 40 years. Looks like I may well have had a crystal ball.
