One week is not enough to go back packing in North Island. More like two weeks.
I have been working for more than two years now and it took me One month on the camper van to cover both islands

Unfortunately my holidays are fixed (teacher). I could push it to ten days (March 30th - 8th April) if necessary. Was going to do the south island during summer hols which are much longer, but thought Easter would be less busy and have better weather. My alternate idea was Bali or Lombok.

North Island is slightly larger than West Malaysia. If you like to outdoor, there so many things to do. You will be hard pressed to rush from one end to another.
Renting a small van which cost about NZD 19 to 50 may to the trick

Since asking a friend about the weather, I didn't quite realise how cold it was going to be. I think I will leave it until 5 week holiday at xmas, as I can cover both islands then, and it will be significantly warmer! Good idea about renting a camper van too!
Plan B - I've been told that the Philippines are really nice around April. Supposedly a place called palawan is worth looking into....

Yes April gets cold in NZ but theres nothing wrong with downing a few brews to keep warm.
Mad Scientist - I was going to PM you but don't have enough post. Are you currently located in NZ? I was hoping to pick you brain for some advice on citizenship renunciation as I'm one of those who cannot enter Singapore.
