Homeschool advice

Post by mamaof2 » Fri, 22 Feb 2013 5:53 am

Our family is looking at moving to Singapore around Sept/Oct. 2013. We are not moving by employment by a company, just on our own and are thinking of homeschooling until we figure out which school we want to send our kids to and to hopefully ease the kids into their new environment. Their ages are 8 and 6 (3rd and 1st grade).

So, I was wondering if there is a homeschool group and how do I get information on homeschooling in another country?

Thank you in advance!

I suggest you get a job before you arrive here as otherwise, you will not be allowed to stay. Unless, that is, you are bringing 5 or 10 million to invest here. Otherwise, you cannot rent on a social visit pass that is only valid for 30 to 90 days. I would suggest you visit ICA.gov.sg or MOM.gov.sg and spend a few hours on those two sites to actually see what may or may not be available to you.

It's not easy.

Thank you for a quick response. I should have made my post a little clearer. My husband will have a job, but his employer does not cover school fees. So, we are on our own for that. We have both previously had PR status and will have to apply again. We are moving there because my mother-in-law (Singaporean) has been diagnosed with cancer.

We have looked into the Singapore American School, but looks like the grades we want for next year are full and it's a bit late to get on their waiting list. I'm just trying to figure out a plan B and because of the timing of our move, may need to consider home school. This whole decision/process has been very stressful and we were thinking maybe letting the kids take some time to adjust would be better.

Homeschooling community in Singapore

Post by mwee278 » Tue, 26 Feb 2013 7:56 am

Hi there,

There is an active homeschooling community in Singapore. We have an online forum which we use to arrange outings and share information. It is a members-only forum but all homeschoolers or thinking about homeschooling are welcome to join.

The link is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/singaporehg/

Singapore homeschoolers have to obtain approval to homeschool from the Ministry of Education once the child is in first grade. However, since you are not Singaporean, you will not need to do this.

I have been homeschooling my 6-year-old boy for two years and we love it!

Let me know if you need more advice.

Michele

Homeschooling

Post by Jinki » Tue, 26 Feb 2013 10:27 am

Hi,

I'm in a homeschooling group on facebook. Search "Singapore Expat - Parents" on facebook. We do have meet up and share information about homeschooling and also local school on the page.

My 3 kids started out homeschooling. By homeschooling,I mean learning Singapore syllabus since we are entering local school. You can email me at [email protected] and I can tell you the whole journey of homeschooling to entering local school.
