i've got an IE Singapore networking thing over next weekend and i need to know if i can free myself that evening.

No, there will be several not so new newbies. All who are invited are not newbies at all but long time regulars who we feel would make for an interesting addition to our gathering. Looking forward to seeing you there. It's a shame I've not heard from Asian_Geekette this time but she is on the road a lot.
