Where to buy beef or turkey jerky??

Post by uscate » Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:22 am

My SO has gone all Paleo on me, and part of the diet involves beef jerky (or I guess turkey jerky as well). I've half heartedly looked around the Cold Storage at VivoCity, and with the exception of Slim Jims (which don't count), I haven't found anything.

Does this even exist in Singapore?

Since I'm still exploring, I'm game to travel to the far reaches to find either a home grown or imported version of this stuff. And please don't tell me to go to the Pet Center!!

Thank you!!

Will Bak Kwa work? It's basically Chinese beef(pork) jerky. That's the stuff they sell at "Bee Cheng Hiang" and "Fragrance Bak Kwa", which you must have seen dozens of already. It's freshly made, and will most likely be pork or beef, no turkey. No idea on the specifics of the paleo diet though, sorry.

Thanks zzm - that is very helpful - I have seen this around, so will see if it will work....And the Paleo diet is essentially living like a cave man (or woman). From what I understand, lots of meat and veggies, but no dairy or grains. It's big with the CrossFit crowd, I guess. It doesn't make much sense to me, but that's for another day....

We're enjoying the quiet of the LNY - no construction nose outside our window! I realized I had tuned that racket out when I wondered at the lack of it!!

Sorry for the late reply...

I think I remember seeing places like Fragrance Bak Kwa selling Turkey Bak Kwa during certain festive seasons! (Probably Thanksgiving or Christmas?) They seemed to be pre-packed(a la Slim Jims) and not freshly-made though!

EDIT : Ah, yes, here's a posting I found..!

Hi and thank you for the response! We went with bak kwa (pork, I think), but this isn't quite as "healthy" as regular old fashioned beef jerky, I think because of the sugar content. Looks like this'll be a treat rather than a staple.

Hmm...generally food meant for fresh/immediate consumption will be healthier I believe..!

Because Bak Kwa was originally made to keep for a period of time, hence the high sugar content..?

If you all do eat out, perhaps Bak Kut Teh and Chicken Rice without rice would be good local staples to have..? (The former I had for a period of time when I first tried to lose weight!)

Nowadays I go vegetarian on weekdays, but I believe different diets suit different body types!

All the best for you and your SO's diet!

My original search for beef or turkey jerky was/is because my sig other is on a Paleo diet. On this diet he can have beef or turkey jerky (in moderation), but the bak kwa apparently isn't Paleo because it is made with sugar (or some kind of sugar derivative - I'm not sure). In any case, he really likes it, but it is really in the "treat" category....Frankly, I'm not a big beef jerky fan, so I'm pretty glad there's none to be found around here!!

Oh, I forgot to update this post.

Cold Storage at Parkway Parade has a bunch of Beef Jerky. It's on a rack at the end of the aisle next to the big sacks of rice.

O-M-G!!! The heavens have parted and the angels have commenced to sing!

Thank you so much for the updated post and for the picture and directions!!! I just saw this, and will be headed over to the store today - I hope there hasn't been a run on the stuff since the 23rd....

Funny/scarey how something like this can just totally make my day....

Yeah after seeing that at Coldstorage, I vaguely recalled seeing it all over the place. Hopefully now that uscate has seen a local package it will catch her eyes too.

In fact, pretty sure I've seen it in 7-11s.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time (and taken the pictures) to respond to my plea....this is such an awesome forum!!

I've made my journey to ColdStorage at Parkway Parade and gotten my fill of beef jerky....I've also checked out the 7-11 in my neighborhood, and in addition to the feminine "shape wear" product (which is highlighted with a video) - WHAT?? I've also found small packets of beef jerky, so thank you Lynx for that heads up.

I truly do appreciate everyone's input in helping us to acclimate to our new home.

You guys are the BEST!! :D

Glad you've found what you need. I know it is hard not being able to find stuff you're so used to in your home country over here.

You're welcome.
