Finding Medical Support on a Public Holiday.

Post by Brah » Sun, 10 Feb 2013 9:46 am

Need to find an open clinic today, just basic neighborhood kind of place, nothing serious but don't want to wait until after CNY.

Don't want to go to a hospital because I think that would mean having to go to A&E which would cost more.

Any ideas?

No, you're right, that was a here-let-me-Google-that-for-you moment on my part.

I actually found that link, was also hoping for some first-hand knowledge, but ones listed there should do.

Thanks.

Edit: Update - 1st one I called from that list wants $120 walk in; the clinic I went to the other day was $20 walk in, so this reiterates the value of local knowledge!

Mt Alvernia Hospital - not for profit and has a cheap 24-hour clinic.

do not go to government hospitals unless it's life threatening (arms falling off, bones sticking out, blood squirting, etc).

they charge >$100 and you'll be waiting for a long time and the overall experience does not match the final bill.

24hr Raffles at the Airport or Raffles Hospital? I think they have a few more too. They're pricier, but I think I paid under $60 for consultation at their "executive" clinic when I went.

You will also find that most of the 24 hour clinics that open all the time also have different rates depending on the time you come in. We have one here where I live and it ranges for $20 (afternoon visit) to $100 plus if after midnight on a weekend or holiday. But it's just like 7-11. You don't normally shop there but when stuck for ice at your party at 1 am, where you gonna go? You pay for the convenience.

i have no affiliation with mt alvernia hospital. 2016 update:

back in 2013, prices were very reasonable, but today, prices seem to have almost doubled.

it's still worthy of a visit if you're in the area as the wait is usually not long. here's an extract of their standard consultation charge as of today (April 11 2016):

Mon-Sat 8am to 6pm
$37.45 Standard Consultation
$48.15 Extended Consultation

Mon-Sat 6pm to 12 mn
$48.15 Standard Consultation
$58.85 Extended Consultation

Mon-Sat 12mn to 8am
$64.20 Standard Consultation
$80.25 Extended Consultation

Sun 8am to 12mn
$48.15 Standard Consultation
$58.85 Extended Consultation

Sun 12mn to 8am
$64.20 Standard Consultation
$80.25 Extended Consultation

Public Holiday 8am to 12mn
$58.85 Standard Consultation
$69.55 Extended Consultation

Public Holiday 12mn to 8am
$74.90 Standard Consultation
$90.95 Extended Consultation

consultation fee excludes a triage/nursing fee and medication charge. x-rays, scopes, scans and the like are extra, like in any hospital.

more details here: https://mtalvernia-hospital.org/24hr-wa ... -services/

please note that mt alvernia does NOT have an accident and emergency trauma system. ie, they do not have emergency medicine specialists, anethesiologists, ER nurses, radiologists, etc, on duty at all times.

IF IT'S A LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY, HEAD TO ONE OF THESE 7 HOSPITALS OR CALL 995:

Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, Changi General Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, National University Hospital and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

SCDF 995 vs 1777 ambulance service website states:

An emergency is an illness or injury that could end in death or serious complication if it is not treated immediately. The following is a guide to cases classified as emergencies:

Drowsiness or unconsciousness where the person cannot be roused
Difficulty in breathing or choking
Sudden or severe chest pain
Sudden or severe abdominal pain that will not go away
Dislocated or broken bones
Deep cuts or wounds with profuse bleeding
Head injuries that are followed by drowsiness, vomiting, bleeding (from the ears, nose or mouth) or unusual behaviour
Injuries to chest, abdomen, pelvis or spine (neck and backbone)
Fall from heights
Poisoning e.g. inhalation of toxic gases or drug overdose resulting in unconsciousness and respiratory distress
Crushed injuries
Severe allergy
Drowning
Burns and scalds -deep with white or charred skin or covering a large area bigger than the size of a hand, or covering the face
Any burn caused by electric shock or by lightning

Great info again from taxico.

Just got back, they are in fact reasonably priced.

Update on the prices - there a $10 holiday surcharge, the cost was $25 for consultation and $15 for 'outpatient nurse service".; as my visit was a quick in and out check to get meds, I think the $15 was for the necessary / unnecesary ear + temp + blood pressure checks, none of which were relevant to my case.

Leaving aside financial matters, none of the expat popular hospitals (i.e. Gleneagles or Mount Elizabeth hospitals) qualifies for life threatening A&E!?

brah: i've included (in my original reply) the $10.70 surcharge into the costs listed under Public Holidays as i see no sense in listing separately a PH surcharge on top of a PH consultation fee.

x9: yes, none of the "private" hospitals are staffed/equipped 24/7 and classified as a ministry of health "national accident and emergency trauma system." only the 7 public ones i listed before.

in such an event, you'd probably be calling 995 and the paramedics will automatically bring you to the most suitable place for treatment.

this does not mean that private hospitals are unable to treat medical emergencies - just not multiple trauma cases around the clock. whatever the case is, these private hospitals have ambulances on standby to bring you to a nearby public hospital if they are unable to treat you adequately.

yes, you will be charged for the ride.

Lunar New Year 2014

Post by taxico » Mon, 27 Jan 2014 8:54 pm

Updated (accurate as of Feb 1st 2016):
http://www.moh.gov.sg/cny2016
http://www.moh.gov.sg/cny2015
http://www.moh.gov.sg/cny2014

MOH releases list of clinics open over the CNY holiday at: http://www.moh.gov.sg/cny2016

(If this post is not updated in 2017, 2018, etc, I believe you can access the up-to-date website by changing the year in the URL to whatever is the current year)

As these clinics are opened over CNY, it is thus likely they are opened on all other Public Holidays. To be sure, please call before visiting.

The public is urged to visit these general practitioners or 24-hour clinics for treatment of non-urgent or life-threatening conditions.

MOH says that the public should only seek treatment at the emergency department in hospitals for urgent and life-threatening emergencies, such as chest pain, breathlessness, and uncontrollable bleeding.

A guideline to what constitutes a medical emergency can be found on the Health Promotion Board’s website at: http://www.hpb.gov.sg/HOPPortal/faces/Resources/AandE
