I'm not too sure about this, but previously, (CMIIW) after we read a new post, the icon will change from "New posts" to "No new posts". It does bug me a little, since I can't see which thread has a newer post.

I'm using Chrome, and the cookies are active.

Same problem, same browser (not sure if thats the issue). Sometimes it changes, sometimes it doesn't for hours. It's sporadic, I haven't figured it out. I just deal with it.

I checked this out with Chrome v. 23.0.1271.101 under OsX and it works fine.

Mine is version 24.0.1312.57 on XP. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

House cleaning (removing cookies, tmp. files etc) does not help?

Nope. Strange enough.
Maybe the "update statement" for icon is somehow locked?
