Self destruction

Post by Steve1960 » Tue, 29 Jan 2013 2:15 pm

I have not been a member here for very long but I have noticed ill feeling and tempers are rising recently.

I have seen this in the past, twice. Both times on car enthusiast forums.

Are we self destructing?

Based on the age and traffic of this board, I'd suspect it will survive.

No I don't think so. This is normally a very mature, informed, considered, constructive and all 'round helpful place :) [moderated by very wise, eloquent, handsome and insightful people (; to the Mods)].

What we have experienced recently is the troll who posted those dreadful photos. And more recently another member who was extended the courtesy (initially) of being let off on quite a long leash, but apparently lacked self-control. However any half-way decent troll intends and manages to stoke up a s***-storm, and ultimately they usually get their result... and then reap the resulting whirlwind.

This forum is usually not a natural habitat for these kind of troubled people. I've been on internet newsgroups and latterly forums for nearly 30 years now so I've seen just about all manner of behaviour. Stick around a little while here though, and you'll soon see why I say this site is good, we just got hit with a mini-cluster of bad apples that have now been shut down. On a site with any vigour and character you have to expect that now again. Trust me it is way better than having a forum where every post has to be pre-moderated before appearing/publishing.

Dood - you have no idea. This is the tamest it's been in years.

It used to get really, really nasty, and there were a few posters who were pretty toxic. I was a bit of a butthead myself back then, under a different handle.

Having said that, JR8's comments about the pictures are spot on, and that was just another example of how childish some people get when they can't hold their own in intellectual (is that what we are doing?) conversations.

It's pretty cyclic when a troll or poster shows up, like that moron last year with the YouTube clip (SMS will remember), but these people don't last long and usually leave with their tail between their legs.

Exactly. Wish I still had that clip....I think he took it down. I would have downloaded it and re-uploaded it just to see all the comments.

What I remember is hearing him say in his mangled English, that he couldn't understand why he would be considered unintelligent (I'm paraphrasing as I don't remember it that well) if he spoke like that overseas.

Yep, that one was pretty good. As was Aunt Batty as JR8 coined her.

Oh her ('AnneTeoh'(?)) .... lol!

It was her commitment to eating shark-fin that really got to me.

Better not get me going again

I though a major clash over shark fin soup you had with WiMH but IIRC it was pretty civilized comparing to the recent ones.
The fact is we had pretty long peaceful period before it happened.
No more local, persistent fighters (not that I miss them) so the nature found a niche and filled it with some Ang-mohs or what? :o

Oh, I don't recall a 'clash' with WiMH :o

Aunt Batty got to me though because she was clinging to myths (such as - eating an animals cartilage is good for the diners cartilage (which is as silly as the beliefs regarding what snake wine and tiger's willy do for a guy's capacity in bed)).

You have to have the image hosted externally and then hot-linked to your message on this forum. I use photobucket.com (as the external host) but there are more around. Just create an account over there, upload the image, find what is the web address of the image (called direct link in photobucket) and put this address between these two tags [ img ] the address [ / img ] (with no spaces inside).

Edited some errors.

I use imgur.com since you don't need to create an account, they automatically give you multiple resized versions of the photo (so you can choose a smaller one), you can upload more than one at a time (or just paste in a URL to steal and rehost it), and they also have a copy and paste in BB Code (the bracket img /bracket thing we use).
