Does he even live there? I thought he moved recently to Belgium.

In any case, I'd also run away from crazy 75% taxes for income over 1 mln euro per year if I were him. Hollande has gone mad. One thing I do not understand: why 75%, not 99.99% right away?

Good point, but I did LOL when I read this quote on the BBC website:

In an open letter, he said he loved Russia, calling it "a great democracy".

Perhaps the French get irony too? :)

France is socialist and has long been (certainly 50+ years, but arguably much longer). Don't forget executing their monarchy, 'Let them eat cake' and all of that.

So, what they get instead is a socialist President who lives in a palace* and who takes up to 90% of peoples' incomes in tax, because it is 'fair and just'.

* haha.... the hypocrisy. The Elysee Palace. How many socialists in Europe live in full-blown palaces, with all the trappings of the haut-aristocracy. Oh, just him!? You might begin to see why the Brits have 'a thing' about the French and their pretensions.

Getting even more funny:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... ussia.html
Former French screen goddess Brigitte Bardot on Friday threatened to follow Gerard Depardieu in asking for a Russian passport, in protest not at tax hikes, but at the treatment of two circus elephants.

But I think, that the real reason for her is tax hikes. It just doeesn't sound "nice" to say that straight, but French government will understand the hint. :)

I think the reason stated in the paper is real. She is well known as a radical animal rights activist. I would rather expect she just exploited the political opportunity to solve the elephant case or acted purely emotional.

[quote]Chechnya, the war-torn autonomous Russian republic, run by warlord Ramzan Kadyrov, has also offered Mr Depardieu a home.

French media have shown a video of Mr Depardieu celebrating the birthday of Chechnya’s ruler in Grozny in 2012, shouting to the crowd: “Glory to Chechnya, glory to Ramzan Kadyrov.”

Far be it from me to doubt BB's sincerity for one minute, but perhaps she can also do something to highlight the apparent cruelty to animals in Russian circuses if she's going to be spending more time there.

He'll pay 13% to the Russian gov't and another 62% to bribes and won't be any better off.

First of all, Russia is not Indonesia or Philippines. Bribes situation is not as bad there. Moreover, he is well-regarded there, he will be treated well. One thing though: his tax will be 30% if he spends less than 180 days a year in Russia. That is still way below 75%.

Come on - I know you're Russian and hence have a positive view but EVERYONE and his dog will be sticking their hand in his back pocket.... The only thing that might save him is his high profile.
