Changing the car insuring company

Post by x9200 » Fri, 28 Dec 2012 10:01 am

Is it as simple as buying a new policy from another insurer for the period after the current policy is already expired?

I am asking this question because in different countries there are different legal regulations or habits (i.e. the insurance gets automatically extended if not terminated before certain date).

i accepted a new quote before the current one expired. then i called up the old insurance company and cancelled it when i got confirmation from the new insurance company my policy has been effected.

the old insurance company mailed me a pro-rated check and that was that.

i think it's best to check your current policy will not auto-extend - it's not required by law but i would not put it past some thievin insurers to do so...

How long did the check take to arrive Taxico, and who was the insurer? Was the process a hassle?

I've received quotes from Aviva that's about half my current, AXA for a year. I was just going to do what x9200 is doing, sign up the day my current expires. If I can actually cancel and get a pro-rated refund, all the better!

Thanks taxico.

Anybody tried http://www.directasia.com/?
Curiousgeorge mentioned them some time ago but for a motorbike. Aviva gives me an online quote ~1200-1300 with $1k excess while Directasia.com ~1100 with $0.6k excess. Coverage looks roughly the same.

I just did an online quote request and they gave me the same price as Aviva, but like you said, with slightly better coverage. Interestingly they also did not ask how many years I've been driving.

it took about a month. another one (company with four letters before the word income) said they had it in the mail but i never received it. i forgot about it until a year later when i badgered them...

btw, you won't get a "full" pro-rated amount coz they'll steal some for "administrative" reasons... but money's money!

i called up every single insurer directly (some call you back coz they don't have a "hotline" after office hours - i left my contact on their website) and bugged the person on the phone until i got the best rate possible

i didn't get the best quote via direct asia. i probably called up over 10 insurance companies in 3-5 days, but it was worth it.
