A money lender will give you a loan of funds, and in return you will repay the funds over an agreed period of time, plus you will pay fees and/or interest.

On the one side the borrower has the advantage of access to funds that he otherwise could not raise, for example a mortgage. On the other the lender gains the benefit of earning a profit on funds which might otherwise sit in his wallet earning nothing, and probably losing value due to inflation.
