I'm An Australian Professional Graphics and 3D designer and Animator, former university faculty lecture and Private 3D trainer.

Im working on a project(Animation) in singapore for periode of 3 months,
I'm planing start my own workshop in singapore in weekends so the students can visit me and participate in workshop, to see and to learn and to practice.

Could you please: Advice How can I start my own workshop in singapore?

what do I need ?
-business License
-Place to rent (ofcourse) meeting room,
-Hardware and software (my own)

right now, I'm not thinking of having a big business but slowly start and see hows going, if there is some good result than later I can extend the business to office and public advertisement.

I do have my website, business cards, flyers, books, Pc' (mac systems) projector and screens and a lot of video tutorials.

so if you know something say something.

the workshop or Private home tuition (one-one) is for small group of 5-6 students. the basic courses are Free and advance course are with Fee.

Please Advice

What is your residency status in Singapore (EP, DP, PR, SVP)? Makes a big difference in the answer.

as long as you regularly teach more than a certain number of students, you will need to register as a private school with MOE (not the same as a private school that confers diplomas - this requires a high level of commitment and substantial investments to qualify for CPE registration).

the most important thing is approval from FSSD (fire safety cert) which actually involves 2 things... the actual fire safety measures itself, but more importantly, the premises approved for use as a school.

if your premises are not suitable (2 exits, lay out of place and size), then approval for use a school AND fire safety certification will not be possible. which means MOE registration is not possible.

when sorting those 2 bits out, do pay attention to the space requirements for each student (i think 3 square meters) in the classroom, as well as waiting/recept area and office. i'm not sure if a "meeting room" will cut it.

your business activity, when you select the correct code during bizfile/acra registration, will automatically trigger a CC to MOE for future follow up action.

but the good news is, i have a feeling for the purposes of animation courses... it may not necessarily be "academic" in nature and thus MOE registration is unnecessary, which may mean that your meeting room free animation classes might just work!

"Definition of a ‘school’

1 A ‘school’ is defined in the statute relating to education and registration of schools as an organisation for the provision of education for 10 or more persons; or a place where 10 or more persons are being or are habitually taught, whether in one or more classes.

2 A facility or an establishment offering instruction deemed to be of a ‘non-academic’ nature, eg. beauty care, dressmaking, cooking, sports, games, driving, recreation-related, etc, is however not brought under the ambit of this statute. An establishment offering education-related services and not conducting lessons or running classes in its premises/principal place of business is not deemed a ‘school’ and hence is also similarly not brought under the ambit of the statute."

all the info you need here:

http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/private ... istration/

(whether or not an animation course falls under another statute i'm unsure) good luck!

Again, as mentioned by Stron Eagle, his residency status here will matter considerably as to whether or not it is viable from HIS POV

Thanks Taxico and eagle for the Advice. Well i'm an 3D animator artist and university lecture, I do have my own studio in dubai and adelaide, I would like to introduce my animation skills to the Singaporean students, I got alot of request if I can have the workshop ( weekends classes) so the student can join this training workshops.

but I wouldn't go for business and marketing at the first stage , but I love to follow country rules to stay away from troubles.

Plus for my training program I required only a classroom or small office so the students( one-one) can attend the classes. normally I do home tuition but instead of going to peoples home I prefer have a nice office so they students can attend the training.

I checked with virtual offices (regus), i'm already member with them, so I can use the facility worldwide. regues they have worldwide office facility including singapore. so regarding the office and insurance i'm ok so far.

My concern about the license, its workshop and only 2 days in 2 weeks.
the rest of the days I'll be in adelaide , south australia.

Regarding visa: Australian citizen on arrival visa (60 day I think)
Regarding Office: Regus office
Regarding license: I dont know, you know better.

do you know any thing more, please say something.

regards
Nasa

i wouldn't worry so much about a "license" since it doesn't seem to appear that graphic design is considered under MOE's purview, and i guess since you're offering instruction for free, it shouldn't matter BUT i would think it's important you check what you're allowed/not allowed to do on a tourist visa.

www.ica.gov.sg

as for "home tuition" and "tuition" - it actually has a slightly different emphasis in singapore, ie, a private tutor giving academic instruction to one or more school going children usually between the ages of 6 (?) to 17 in a subject like maths or chemistry.

good luck, and i hope your venture takes off (be it just satisfaction or on a more commercially successful basis).

Thanks for the guide and Advice Guys.

That is what I need ."Miscellaneous Work Pass"

The Miscellaneous Work Pass is for foreigners on short-term assignments (up to a maximum of 60 days) that fall into the following activity categories

-A foreigner who is involved in activities directly related to the organisation or conduct of any seminar, conference, workshop, gathering or talk concerning any religion, race or community, cause, or political end

I'm not sure how you figure a course/seminar on digital imaging falls into " religion, race or community, cause, or political end". Do YOU see a connection?

The wording is quite ambiguous isn't it? I would have taken it to mean any one of these:
any seminar,
any conference,
any workshop,
any gathering or
a talk concerning any religion, race or community, cause, or political end

3D, might be worth a quick email or call to clarify.
