Bouldering

Post by excessuk » Mon, 10 Dec 2012 1:41 am

Can anyone recommend a good place to do bouldering in Singapore? I got pretty addicted to it here in London (I'm not very good though! haha) and would like to continue with the good habit if possible.

Thanks!

I think you'd have to head to Malaysia, as essentially SG is a built-upon mud-flat. I've tried but failed to think of any rocky outcrops at all!

Tioman island off the east coast of Malaysia certainly has rocks suitable for bouldering...

p.s. a random Google brought up this. Check pix at bottom...

Search for "Dairy Farm" via your favorite search engine.
"A quokka is what would happen if there was an anime about kangaroos."

WOW that looks absolutely amazing! I can't wait to go there! Added to my list of places to visit now, thanks! =)

What about indoors bouldering? I know it's not the same but at least it might be a good exercise.

Google suggested this link: http://www.indoorclimbing.com/singapore.html
Do you know any of those places?

Cheers

Indoor: Kinetics at Paya Lebar has one.

Outdoor: Dairy Farm. It is near the lake where the old mine used to be.

Extra: It is cheaper to do it in Malaysia and Vietnam for the same safety level. For indoors, head to MidValley Megamall in KL. There are many outdoor bouldering spots (to name a few, Fairy Cave in Kuching, Tempurung Cave in Gopeng etc). In Vietnam, you can do it in Dalat and Halong Bay - beautiful!

Thanks for the great advice. I just checked them all - really beautiful. In particular I was very impressed with Halong Bay! My to-do list of destinations just keeps growing :)

Heya! I got into rock climbing (bouldering) in the UK too :) Singapore has a few bouldering/rock climbing gyms, and I usually hang around at these indoor gyms:

- Onsight (@ Mountbatten Station): Largest indoor climbing gym in Singapore, with bouldering, top-roping and lead-climbing routes.
- Climb Asia (@ Farrer Park Station): Smaller than Onsight.

Apart from these two, there's also Climber's Laboratory, Kinetics, and a few others; but the above two I mentioned are very popular for many climbers.

In my opinion though, having enjoyed bouldering in the UK so much it was a bit of an anticlimax checking out the bouldering routes/walls here. The colored-taping system, routes and wall structure are some things I guess will take a while to get used to, perhaps...
Am currently doing top-roping to satisfy my climbing kick ;)

Thanks for the good info - I can't wait to get back to it!!

Being realistic I'll probably be too busy at the beginning just trying to find a flat to rent and generally finding my way around Singapore, but will definitely drop you a PM to sort something out once I'm settled and my routine is in order.

With the multitude of Xmas lunches/drinks I'll need an extreme weight loss regime if I have any hope of pulling my arse up a wall

Haha, sounds like you have quite a bit going on over there! Good luck with flat-hunting and everything, and keep me posted on when you're up for a session sometime! Weight-loss will be a breeze once you hit the walls again ;)

London is hectic this time of the year! Is that not the case with Singapore?
