The biggest comedian in US at the moment is occupying the Whitehouse. Isn't he an Ivy Leaguer?I was going to say 'Imagine if much quality US comedy derived from Ivy Leagers', but university in the UK and US are totally different endeavors and a separate topic!

SOME PEOPLE TRY TO TURN BACK THEIR ODOMETERS. NOT ME. I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHY I LOOK THIS WAY. I'VE TRAVELED A LONG WAY, AND SOME OF THE ROADS WEREN'T PAVED. ~ Will Rogers
But was the 'laser-fast humour' off the script, or impro? An interesting mention of Mark Twain... I'd thought of him solely as an author.
Both, he had a live TV game show which was in the days before shows were taped and he did a lot of improv, You Bet Your Life. Twain was a speaker as well as a writer. An orator perhaps.
And you're right - Woody is more highbrow, and therein may lie the difference - perhaps there is more mainstream dumbwit American comedy compared with counterparts in the UK.
I wouldn't use those words and I don't think it applies. I'd look for a reason, like most US TV being commercial (do PBS in the US commission any comedy?). Plus, needing to appeal to a broader audience, which I think by definition - as with music, art, food, etc - means it loses 'edge'.
I would agree. Oddly enough, one of the main things I used to watch on PBS, before we had cable, was The Monty Python Show. PBS was the only station who carried it. Plus they aired the Pink Floyd at Pompeii concert.
The sarcasm and intellect is not found there whereas it may be found more easily and more often in UK shows.
I'm not sure about 'intellect', just I think the UK is socially/culturally more mature than the US. Not a criticism BTW, in fact arguably the opposite. But, that said, a lot of British comedy is a product of Cambridge University and alumni thereof. I was going to say 'Imagine if much quality US comedy derived from Ivy Leagers', but university in the UK and US are totally different endeavors and a separate topic!
Right, Pat Boone being funny is pretty hard to imagine. I think you called it right with the commercialism.
I like Seinfeld the show more for entertainment than comedy; as as a comic he used to be hot and cold funny/not so funny, I wouldn't include him in a list of sarcastic, witty or cerebral American comedians.
Well I don't know [scratched head]. I'd at least hope a comedian is witty...
p.s. Anyway, Vive le difference eh?
You're right Seinfeld is witty, but not sarcastic wit witty

Shows I love:
Three's company
I love Lucy - all time favorite
Big Bang theory
The amazing race
Impractical jokers
The twilight zones
How do I look
America's got talent- only the audition parts
House hunters international
Shark tank
Taboo
American shows that I hate
Family guy- hate it the most cant even stand even a minute listening to it. Filled with a lot of dry sick humor which is common like abortion, drugs, gays and 99% of sex jokes. What made me sick the most is that a lot of American kids watch it and they thought its funny. I'm talking bout kids as young as 8 years old.
South Park - I admit that I do watch it sometimes
Here comes honey boo boo- worthless to even mention bout it
Dancing with the star - just super cheesy
All the "real housewives" series
The jersey shore - snooki really???
The real world show
I forgot the tittle bout it's a show bout nothing but Americans having a booze parties and getting all drunk to even forget that some of them are not even wearing underwear
"What would you do" show - stupid show bout asking people how they gonna react to certain situation when the chances of its gonna happen will none.
The bachelor and the bachelorette
Love in the wild show
Well that's only a few I can think of. But I'm sure there's a lot shows that I hate than love.

Interesting, sounds like a comment from good old Local Lass from a few years back re having issues with "black humor, sick" etc. comments.
And then saying she/he likes South Park, which is much more raw than Family Guy.
Not surprising this kind of comment came from someone in Malaysia or Singapore, per some posts on another recent thread in this forum.
BTW, FG is not really a kids show, most of the humor would go over kid's heads, intentionally. Looks like yours as well, though you are entitled to your opinion.
"bout' is not a word in English unless referring to having an episode of something, like a bout of naivete.
