Been offered a contract to perm role BUT

Post by Goldy740 » Fri, 23 Nov 2012 11:56 am

Hi there,

i have just been offered a 6 month contract (which will hopefully go permanent) by a big Multi National, they said they were going to be able to provide me with a Serviced Apartment but have just informed that it's for internal staff on secondment only which is really frustrating. Most people i have spoken to out here tell me that rental property's are usually for 24 months, clearly that would be too risky for me.

What option's do i have? there must be lot's or people out here who aren't on permanent contract's and i can't believe they're all living in hotel's!!

6 months and then conversion to permanent is a common lie by vendors to potential contractors to make them feel like they will enjoy employee benefits soon if they work well. In fact when you join, you will find out that conversion takes 3-4 years (or more if they are not willing to due to financing), after you converted you start from 0 - lowest position possible, any promotion will be possible after another 3 years if there is movement up the ladder.
Second common lie - salary will be revised every year. Keep waiting for that! I wonder, for how many years you will be able to do that... :)

Negotiate BIG salary that includes risks of inflation and rent increase estimate for the next several years (until you gain experience in that field, resign and find a permanent role in another or the same company) and don't rely on those fairy tales you are told. But don't sit on that position for too long - it will screw up your salary history.

Btw, 12 months is also common rental contract term. Rarely you can find 6 months. But usually no less (maybe, some room).

Agree with Sergei. The 6 months contract to permanent arrangement is good enough for locals and PRs not for foreigners.

Regarding your question: there must be lot's or people out here who aren't on permanent contract's and i can't believe they're all living in hotel's!!

Its true and people might be living in shared accomodation, illegally, that is not the company's headache it is your headache.

BTW, is that MNC an Indian Software biggie? If yes, they are cheapo, blood suckers dont overglorify them by calling them MNCs, lol. Or are you on vendor payroll. Again big blood suckers, read the contract properly. I just learnt from couple of colleagues that some vendors have made them sign contracts that if they dont stay for atleast 2 years with the company they need to pay 5K SGD, holy shit. Some companies are real leaches here.

Please stay at home, even if it means it is India, its better than SG at the moment, unless it is permanent job with real MNC like Oracle, IBM etc
