"Calling the State" in the US Elections

How does this work?

Are the ballots counted automatically as the TV channels "call the states" about 10 mins after the polls close.

Historical patterns emerge so the stations will extrapolate that to a win or loss for a candidate base on past voting trends. Doesn't always work that way, but there you go. Until 100% of the precincts are in it's not a done thing but a reasonable guess.

The cable networks will probably end up jumping the gun in a race for a scoop (and ratings). Remember how Fox and CNN did that with the Supreme Court Obamacare ruling? Everybody else was making fun of them for days.
