What have they done to Hungrygowhere ?

Post by dbenne22 » Thu, 11 Oct 2012 7:38 pm

Today they have revamped the site - when you search by food type it brings up a list sorted by 'relevance' - with many places without a single vote. No option to re-sort by popularity - only alphabetically (very useful - NOT)

What the ??

Hey Stranger. How's in going down in Oz? Miss us yet! Are up here at the moment or logging in from Oz?

Hadn't been on the site for a while as I know where you are located. ;-) But looking at it, I'd have to say it really sucks. I'm wondering if they emptied the database during the revamp to get rid of the stuffer types of recommendations? It's hard to navigate and as you have noted, only two sort options although you can narrow it down by searching by area/type.

Hey, why don't you go complain to them here? Facebook page I see what you mean, it does suck. I tend not to use it, like SMS, I know where my favourite Thai restaurant is! ;)

Oh good lord; I remember it being bad for deciding where to eat then but now, it's just a glorified directory. Are they trying to be Singapore's Yelp?

These people just don't get it.

Just for you guys to know, the creators of the site sold off their rights to a media company few months ago. So I guess that's the direction it is going.

Never noticed since it was rendered useless by its poor use of Bing long before selling out.

So now it's hungry no where? Was on the bottom of my search list anyway... sounds like the media company is trashing their investment.

To be honest, HGW was never good to start with. Even when it was conceived, the three founders already had been pushing to business owners to have them advertised for money. So as sincere as reviewers were in their reviews, genuinely good establishments do not get as much exposure as they deserve if they don't pay.

Although I appreciate that nearest highly-rated establishments are somewhere on top of the list, I still find that the search is below satisfactory.

Now it is worse, non-rated paying establishments get pushed up instead.

What are the best alternatives to HGW now that it has been neutered?

Word of mouth from locals? :P

Perhaps Green Book or Youtubes of local food hunt episodes.

Yep, missing Singapore, missing great friends, good food and WARMTH !

I think you're right - they have truncated the database - all the old reviews gone, all the recent votes gone - what's left is pretty much worthless :(

The problem is, it's only one person's point of view.

Well......

...still better than the unorganized, neutered clusterphuck of hungrynowhere.

Yeah noticed this as well when about to post a positive review of a place I had just found.

The new site is useless. It's hard to find the reviews, unless I Google them - including the many I put up there over the years. All those carefully crafted and considered reviews......

I always thought it was a good way to keep restaurants in line and to provide useful feedback, to customers and to reward good service, food and dining experiences to establishments.

And of course to give those who needed it a good slap.

Good question SingLaw - we need a good one, and not someone else's blog.
