2 weeks Xmas hols in Indo from Sydney HELP!!

Post by Lilou1323 » Thu, 20 Sep 2012 8:00 pm

Hi,

I live in Sydney, I've never been to Indo. All I have is 2 weeks. bang on Xmas, til new year (2nd)
I will be traveling with my bf.
We are on a budget.
What we want to do is finding a nice peacefully beautiful spot to surf, treck, interact with the locals and relax.
I haven't researched properly the options, I really know nothing about backpacking in Indo yet. So I though I seek some local help from you guys and take it from there.
Would love to treck a volcano, and snorkel. But not sure if it's doable geographically, and in such a short period. Defo don't want to spent time going from here to there in order to see stuff. A minimum let's say. It's not about the numbern of things we see, it's about the xperience and the relaxation..
We're going to do it backpacker style, not 4stars type things..

That's pretty much it..!
I hope I can get some good advise?

Thanks for yr help, much appreciate.

Lid

Oh, my. 1 question: which part of Indonesia that you want to visit? My suggestion: do not pick Jakarta or Bandung (I'm not trying to scare you, but you can do some small research about Indonesia during Christmas. As for Bali? Well, two bombs so far.). My suggestion? Jogja.

Bali would be the best option. Search Tripadvisor. However you can't do much if bad people plans to bomb it anyway. Just make sure you don't put yourself in crowded place, partying on Christmas eve or Christimas night itself.

Don't think Jogja will quite fit the bill.... :P

And the Bali bombings were in 2002 & 2005, 7 & 12 years ago. Although the current mood due to some idiot film maker in the US, I think I'd go to Hawaii instead of anywhere in Indonesia where Caucasian congregate.

At least OP can interact with locals in Jogja
As for Bali, some guys that I know mention that it's too crowded, especially during NYE.

Hi, we are fm Sydney, Australia. We live in Jakarta at the moment. Bali is nice. You can travel to Lombok, which is nicer, all the expats go there for short holidays.

Good luck on your holiday.

If you are thinking along the lines of exotic fun..
try Kelimutu, and you could stop by Flores island...usually there is shared transportation to the volcano around dawn., thereafter see the breathtaking sunrise on the summit, then walk or hitch a ride back to Moni town. That's what we did the other time round. Let me know if you need more info.

I went earlier this year (Gili Air) for diving. Agreed it is a lovely spot, and a damned sight nicer than Bali which last time I went (c95) was already tourist-hell.

I didn't post this earlier though as as far as I know the Gili's don't get much surf.
