I just came back from Korea last month. I don't think you need tour guide if you go big cities.
Here is some places that I've been to:
1 Seoul
- Gyeongbukgung Palace incl. National Palace Museum of Korea and National Folk Museum of Korea
actually there are some more palaces (Changdeok-gung, Changgyeong-gung, Deoksu-gung, etc), but I didn't cover them due to lack of time
- Gwanghwamun Square incl. King Sejong and Admiral Yi Exhibition Hall
- Namsangol Hanok Village (nearby area: Korea House Restaurant, every night they have buffet dinner and traditional dance performance)
- Namsan Tower (you can go there by public bus or cable car. there is free shuttle bus to cable car station from Myeondong station)
- National Museum of Korea
- Lotte World
- shopping: Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, Insadong
2. DMZ tour -> you need to book from local tour as you may not enter the military camp without tour guide
3. Gyeongju
- Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto
- Gyeongju National Museum
- Anapji Pond
4. Jeju
- Loveland
- Jungmun Complex: Teddy Bear, Dolphin+Sealion+Monkey show, Jusangjeolli Cliff
- Triack Art Museum
- Manjanggul Lava-tube
- Seongsan Ilchubong
- Sangumburi Crater
actually there are more places you can visit in Jeju such as: Hallim Park, Hallasan Park
