some good numbers there to look. For me the most relevant is the restaurant price index as a traveler.
housing etc, not much impact as I won't change living countries, or well maybe when I retire but that's still quite some time away I'm afraid.

The restaurant one does shows how cheap Japan is nowadays contrary to the old stigma that got stuck in my mind that Japan is expensive.

I only started traveling there quite recently, and was surprised how cheap it is to eat out well in Japan, especially compared to Europe and US or Australia, which are all bloody expensive nowadays.

What’s happening in Seattle? How could it be above Singapore in cost of living?

Microsoft & Boeing might have a lot to do with it?

Real estate costs. Drive up the cost of everything. Happening in lots of places that attract tech... Austin, for example.

I would in recent years rather say Amazon and Microsoft, those both have HQ there, a lot of highly paid staff and stock plans been giving crazy returns recently.

Boeing stock not that great recently.

But yes from my visits to Seattle for work over last 10 years, it's been more expensive than Singapore for some time. So no suprise there, just any meal out there cost you same in USD than S$ here.

I’m sorting of deviating away from the prior discussion. I just wanted to say for the benefit of anyone British reading. Compared to the UK, everything besides Groceries are cheaper here. It’s wonderful.

And thanks to Redmart, you can get a lot of international food products too.

When I travelled to the UK, I found some pretty good deals at TK Maxx (equivalent of TJ Maxx in the states) that you’d never find here.

I also bought some brand named clothing and some shoes that were better quality and price than what I can find here.

Come to think of it, I also bought several items that were really cheap on amazon.co.uk and had them sent to my hotel.

One other interesting factoid, when online shopping in the UK, some e-tailers do ship to Singapore, and because Singapore is exempt from the 20% VAT, the all-in price can be equal or even cheaper than ordering in the UK (including shipping)!

I’m genuinely worried my foreign wife will have difficulty settling in Singapore. Money aside, language and now this pandemic period just gives me anxiety. I hope I am proven wrong

Don’t worry too much, we all feel it. You’ll be fine.
