Just intuitively, the COL rankings seem off in several instances. Look at where Phnom Penh sits. Even in the capital, living in Cambodia is rather cheap from everything I’ve gathered, certainly not equal to or more than Beijing. Likewise, HCMC being ranked equal to Cebu city — it should be at least a few notches lower. We all know Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore are consistent contenders for the highest COL in Asia, no surprise there — although I wonder how much of the Yen drop is baked into the ranking for Tokyo. It’s at a crazy low level right now; that should have helped bring the cities in Japan down more than a few notches.

Oakland, CA… higher cost than Singapore?

I drove through O-town a couple weeks ago… what a dump! I would not stop my vehicle anywhere in that town. Graffiti, urban blight, questionable looking people on every corner. Worse than Detroit.

I've not been in Oakland since 1977 when I when to the Coastal School of Deep Sea Diving on Alameda. I rented a room in Oakland just across the bridge from Alameda and the school was located at the bridge. At that time Oakland was a hotbed of racial strife (it was mostly all black there except for one area which held the Nat'l Headquarters for the Hell's Angels. I got a great story about Oakland though (couple of beers at an Eagles sometime after CNY calms down?)

Interesting that they have Portland, Oregon ahead of Singapore for cost of living.

A newly married cousin of mine recently moved to Portland with his British-Jamaican bride, I’ll have to swap notes with him to see if it’s really true.

The average salary = S$6,596.41

The average cost for a family of 4 in Singapore is S$5,415.70 excluding rent.

The average rent is S$5,085.48 for a 3 bedder outside the city area.

That’s a total of $10,500 in expenses on a $6,600 salary… and I guess it excludes school fees for what would presumably be 2 kids in this scenario.

Seems about right.
