Depends on the place. Like, for example, budget travelling in Taiwan for 5 days (includes ticket + hotel + food + shopping [non-frenzy] + transport), 1000S$ is more than enough, and you can save it in around 2-3 months.

Whoa...

I backpacked in Vietnam and Cambodia for almost two months with twice that amount.

:P

Actually, 700S$ is enough, but, well, the biggest expense is for the foods in cafe (toilet cafe and Hello Kitty cafe) and street foods (well, it's hard for me to resist the temptations around night markets)

it helps too if you've set aside some money for travelling and have a location in mind. Keep a look out for travel deals which includes 2-way tix + hotel + breakfast in a centralized/convenient location near where you're thinking of exploring. So for about $2k, you can probably cover 2-3 short trips in Asia, depending on what you do and where you go.
