Meet-up at my place (strict RSVP)& Newcomer's only age 2

Post by manan_sagar » Sun, 05 Aug 2012 11:22 pm

Hi all
I am 10 days old in Singapore. Moved in from London and am probably going to be in Singapore for the next 1-2 years.
I am hoping to meet some new people, who are in the 'same boat' as me (http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/manan-sagar/1b/4a8/b53).
I am at Marina Bay Residences and am planning this for 8th August.
I will not have any furniture, but will arrange for some music and drinks (happy for you to BYO as well, more the better).
Please RSVP to [email protected] and I will email you my apartment number and I will add you to the guest list.
Again, RSVP is a must. The Concierge will not let you get in if you are not on the list. At the moment, I have 10 people, and am hoping to have around 20.
Cheers
Manan

Sounds like a backwards way to meet people to me, and a possible recipe for trouble and/or a really dud night ...

I would not recommend open house parties (well, full-stop actually!), never mind in a country you arrived in last week. Actually.... are you completely nuts!? :o

@JR8, I think it's a safe way for an open party while still being selective. Of course, the quality of guests will depend on OP's discretion in choosing who goes on the list!

My thinking was is might be wiser getting your feet under the desk and going to a forum meet-up or similar.

To turn up in a new country, join a forum last week and host an open house is 'most bold' to me. But hey ho, horses-for-courses and best of luck etc!

p.s. To me it's like moving to NYC and in the first week throwing an open house. Well... [shrug]

@JR8,
Have you heard of free will and personal choice?
Also, not sure you can read very well.
This is a meet-up for Newcomer Expats between 20-35, and by Guest List only, not an Open House Party.
And just taking your NYC analogy further, thats exactly what I had done in NY in 2007, when I moved there for a year. And it was brilliant.
Anyway, I hope you have something better to do than advising on a forum.

Another option is booking a BBQ pit and inviting folk there, it's then less personal space and less likely for you to be robbed by folk masquerading as professionals.

Good luck though.

Also less likely that your neighbours call in the mounties. If you are new, how do you suppose you will vet the rsvps? You don't know anybody and they may well be totally different than on the board. But, it's your party. I won't be there.
