GST on bringing bike in?

Post by sturoy » Sun, 29 Jul 2012 11:28 pm

Hi,

I am moving to Sg in a couple of months time, and I want to bring my race bicycle with me.

If I bring it on the airline (emirates) they are going to charge me about £300. I think I can ship it there cheaper then that, but does that mean I am going to have to pay GST on it? It is about a year old, cost about SGD2k.

Secondly, as I do not yet have a job lined up, do I just enter on a tourist visa? And does this in any way affect the GST payable?

Thanks.

You will enter on a tourist visa. What country are you from (passport)? You may need to apply for a visa.

Your bicycle, since it is more than one year old, is not subject to GST. Whomever you select as a shipper should be able to provide you with a blank pro forma invoice for a value declaration... not the new price... its current value, and a form that you will fill out to indicate that this is previously owned personal property.

BTW, where are you planning to ship the bike (local address, that is)?

The bike will be getting shipped in from the UK. I'm British, so I don't think I need apply for a visa, I just get it on arrival.

I am going to get the bike shipped to a friends address, but I should arrive in Sg before the bike does.

Does that mean that anything over a year old that I ship will be free from GST, regardless of its value?

Thanks for your help!
