POSB is / was Master card

Fevo is / was Master Card

NTUC - well, the OCBC co-branded - it was Visa
Hmmm... Maybe I have to search for information on "which card that will have less issues".

I think you can sometimes have a problem where the retailer needs to block an amount of funds on your card. So I can see why that might be a problem with car hire, say in case you returned it with an empty tank, or incurred a speeding violation that only showed up a few days later.

I didn't say I've had 'no issues' relying on debit cards. Once recently I was unable to book flights online via a small charter airline in Europe, it must have recognised it as a debit not credit card.

And secondly a hotel in Cebu. I booked it online on my debit card, but at check in they wanted a credit card to block a section of funds against things charged to the room. (Strange, as the Fullerton did not have this same request with my debit card booking!).

The three flights I mentioned though, were all booked online with the debit card, without any problems.

Was it Shangri La Mactan ? they were doing manual authorisation, which works a bit different - it needs a credit card :) Not debit card ..

Online / electronic authorisations - work with debit cards .. mostly.

Nope it was on the main island, a new place right opposite a vast shopping mall (biggest in Cebu?). Forget it's name though. It took me 20 minutes to check in and I was the only guest standing there... wasn't too impressed since I had a confirmed and paid booking!

Radisson ? well, my Cebu is very rusty though

In any case, as long as they cannot do an online authorisation, they will refuse debit cards, as the merchant cannot process the authorisation .. never figured it out though

I had no problems in using Debit cards in Boracay, Palawan .. and more places, for hotel guarantee ..

About the 20 minutes, well, it is part of the 'service' to make you enjoy your check in .. :D No offence .. ;)

I just got off from calls trying to book hotel rooms in Boracay for my upcoming work trip and boy, it wasn't as smooth as I hoped to be.

The hotel rep refused to accept credit cards, let alone debit cards and insisted only on TT.

There is a high incidence of credit card fraud in the Philippines. People like getting credit cards and they think they get free money. A lot of businesses get burned because of that.

That of course, doesn't excuse them for saying they'll accept credit cards until you actually try to use one to pay.

It is Alta Vista de Boracay and the reason I had to choose there is because it is the closest to the convention venue.

Tell me if you dig something interesting :P

The payment network should mean almost nothing to you, just whether the merchant accepts the card or not.

Any positive or negative experience you could have possibly had with the card (short of a merchant just not accepting that network) would have been with the card issuing bank.
