All -
We faced an interesting conundrum last week when we went to open a bank account for my spouse (who is an LTSVP holder, I am the sponsoring PR).
We were initially told that my spouse could not open an independent account, and it has to be a joint one with me.
When we submitted the application form, we were told that my spouse cold not open a joint account anyway because there was no proof of residence - despite us submitting our marriage cert, and my proof of residence!
They asked us for a phone statement / utilities statement etc which proved my spouse's address - all of which are in my name. And I am quite sure we can't open any of the above up without another proof of address!
All this because the LTSVP card does not state address! The kicker is that a Dependent Pass older (tied to a relatively less-permanent EP holder) would have no such issues because the DP card states address!!
The bank could not offer any alternative solution, so we are stuck in limbo here. I was quite surprised (and amused in parts) at this - was wondering if anyone else has faced this situation - are we overlooking something obvious on our part, or this just an unexpected loophole in the system?
We're going to meet with another manager today to explain our case - fingers crossed!

Ditto in my wife's case. We opened an independent account for her at UOB, without much fuss.zzm9980 wrote:My wife has her own bank account in her own name, with Visa Debit card, etc, at OCBC. She doesn't have a job, and her address isn't on her DP. Nothing was asked for except her passport and her DP.
Very odd - the bank we approached is one of the two mentioned above! Must be specific to the two front-line people we met at the particular branch then... they were both insistent that they cannot open up an independent account.
Perhaps this is a new MAS requirement?
Regardless, we'll try the other branches.

Other banks would be better .. POSB refused for a similar case, and insisted the spouse be under a joint account .... and 3 branches echoed the same ..roryn wrote:Very odd - the bank we approached is one of the two mentioned above! UOB - no issue - that was like a year ago ..
