Film industry in Singapore

Post by Blithclockwalk » Wed, 27 Jun 2012 6:26 pm

Hi there! I'm currently based in London, UK.
My wife is from Singapore and we are planning to move to Singapore in the next few months.
I saw this forum and just wanted to see if anyone here knows about the film industry in Singapore?

Aside from developing & producing my own projects I have been working freelance in various departments within the industry here in London, for the past years.

The plan is to get work in Singapore either teaching film or getting a job in the industry. Then once I start getting an income I can concentrate on developing my own projects. I have a production company in London and I was considering moving it to Singapore. That shouldn't be a problem?

Anyway, any feedback, tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Your timing is potentially good as the Mediapolis campus is under construction at One North. In particular, Infiinite Studios is expected to open there this year. A Google search should turn up lots of info on these projects. And here's a thread on a similar topic from a few months ago:

So there is a fair amount of activity here that you might be able to get involved in via LinkedIn connections, etc. I work on the technical side of the broadcast and new media business, so I'm not very well connected with the film industry, but I'd be happy to try to assist you further if that would be of help. Feel free to PM me (you need to make 5 posts before you can do that) if you'd like to connect on LinkedIn or discuss further.

Good luck

Do a forum search for "EntrePass" threads to give you an idea on the process of moving/starting your own business here as a foreigner. It doesn't seem hard, but it's not quite just show up and open shop either.

I've read a bunch about Lucas having large studios here. No idea what you do exactly, but if you go to their job search engine and only select "Singapore, they have 31 open positions currently. Targeting specific companies and applying directly from their site seems to be one of the better ways for foreigners to find positions in Singapore. Not sure it applies to the film industry but it couldn't hurt to look.

The film industry in Singapore - as in movies - is pretty small (but passionate about what they do.) And while there is a great deal of noise and excitement about Singapore becoming a 'media hub' (the Singapore government just loves the word 'hub'...), there is no real guarantee of this thing taking off in the way the Singapore 'gahment' hopes it will.

Most of the feature directors/producers/production houses make their bread and butter doing TV commercials and marketing videos as well as a certain amount of commissioned work for TV broadcasters (Mediacorp and the cable networks).

The TV commercial production industry here is pretty vibrant but very competitive. I would think that rather than simply opening up your own production company here without industry contacts, you might be better off at least initially getting freelance assignments with existing companies.

For some good leads, you can check out the Advertising Production Resource Central - Singapore and Beyond Facebook group:

I met someone - and I can't remember where or who, but she was a set designer back in the UK. Now she is teaching set design part time at 2 of the arts colleges and is the only person in SG doing so. there is a need for experienced film people to teach from what I understand.
