VPN Suddenly Slowed Down

Post by Rorry » Mon, 18 Jun 2012 9:43 am

I have cable Internet from one of the Big suppliers here. I have used I-pad beaming onto Apple TV to block my VPN and watch UK tv. This has all worked pretty well for about 2 years, even if it means not escaping my wife’s awful soap operas!
Anyway within the last month or so it has died. I still get 15-18mbps uncloaked but as soon as I switch on VPN it goes down to .03mbps, best is .6mbps. I have tried several providers. But haven’t managed to get any noticeable difference.
I think I'm pretty savvy on these things but am clueless. I have tried with PC and a Mac. PC is a little better but still pretty awful.
Has anyone has similar issues? Is there any reason for it? Is big brother watching me? I'm not sure my QI addiction is all that interesting?
My only solution is to wait for Viewquest to get there cables laid to me. They seem to offer a built in cloaker (Not that I am in anyway associated with them).
Thoughts?

Have you tried a different VPN service? Try a different provider, different protocol, or minimally, if your current provider has different end-points, try that.

You're probably not being watched, but you're probably being traffic shaped. If you're using a free VPN, might be time to upgrade!

Are you only trying UK VPNs? I wonder if they are onto you (due to D/L volumes) and have cut your speed to non-streaming rates when you go to UK sites?

Maybe try streaming some non-uk TV (via a non UK VPN) just as a test to see if it works.

p.s. ip anonymity on SG fibre optic cable? I wouldn't have thought the government would allow that.

Thanks. I have a paid for proxy, actually several while I test them. I liked the idea about different countries and have been around the world tonight. Sadly UK seems slowest, even Rep of Ireland, which even with my geography, must be further is quicker. Sadly RoI doesn't get BBC.
This is the cable I mentioned. I know it seems too good to be true, I read about it in Digital Life. As I say nothing to do with me.

I guess I will just keep on trying, or watch the 13th re run of celebrity Masterchef.....grrrr
